Beavers corral Mustangs and clinch 33-0 shutout

Bemidji State shuts out Southwest Minnesota State on Senior Day

BEMIDJI, Minn. – RV/23 Bemidji State University Football grabbed a 33-0, shutout victory over the Southwest Minnesota State University on Senior Day Saturday, Sep.14. The Beavers contained the Mustangs to 155 offensive yards while reaching 451 themselves. 
 
The Beavers started their scoring streak late in the first quarter, Jayden Washington grabbing a five-yard rushing touchdown and Joey Prondzinski adding the extra point. Around a quarter later, Jarrett Gronski grabbed a touchdown of his own with a nine-yard touchdown rush, making it 13-0 in favor of the Beavers. Prondzinski added another point for the Beavers, bringing it to 14-0. 
 
Bemidji State and Southwest Minnesota State went back-and-forth during the first portion of the third quarter until a two-play drive ended with a Sam McGath to Brice Peters connection for 26 yards. Another McGath to Peters connection unfolded with just 1:29 remaining in the third period, a three-play drive lasting just over one minute and adding up to 66 yards. 
 
Kicking off the final frame, the Beavers came out swinging when the Mustangs fumbled on their own 2-yard line and Theodus Ringgold grabbed it, earning the turnover and starting a 14-play drive. The drive ended with a 15-yard rushing touchdown from Antonio Brown, the first of his career. Prondzinski capitalized on the extra point attempt, giving BSU its 33rd and final point of the evening. 
 
The Beaver defense dominated the Mustangs, holding SMSU to 155 yards on 48 plays, allowing an average of 3.23 yards per play. Additionally, the Gang Green defense grabbed five tackles for a loss and three sacks, one each from Marcus Hansen, Cade Barrett and Marco Cavallaro. The Beaver secondary created a nightmare scenario for the Mustangs, marking four total pass breakups and one interception from Isaiah Johnson
 
Offensively, Sam McGath went 18-26-1 through the air for 271 yards and two touchdowns. Zach Romak also earned some time under center, completing both of his passing attempts, the first of his career. On the receiving end of their passes, Brice Peters grabbed five targets for 128 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 25.6 yards per reception and a long reception of 64 yards. On the ground, Beaver running backs grabbed three touchdowns, split between Jayden Washington, Antonio Brown and Jarrett Gronski. Washington led the team with 51 rushing yards, followed closely by Brown with 42 and Justin Incaprera with 41. 
 
Joey Prondzinski earned 300 yards off his six kickoff tries, averaging 50 yards per kick. The Beavers also punted three times with Connor Mantelli grabbing 124 yards with an average of 41.3 yards per punt. BSU had just one, five-yard punt return from Drayton Lehman, though they forced SMSU to punt five times. 
 
The Beavers now prepare to travel to University of Sioux Falls next week for the third Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competition of the season. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. from Bob Young Stadium in Sioux Falls, S.D. The game will be broadcasted live on NSIC Network and available for listeners on the Beaver Radio Network.
