MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Women's Hockey team fell 6-4 to No. 11/12 Penn State University Friday afternoon in game one of the East/West Showcase hosted by University of Minnesota at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn.

After taking a 3-1 lead over the Nittany Lions with 35 minutes remaining, Penn State stormed back to score four-straight goals. Bemidji State responded with 3:33 left to pull the Beavers back within one late but a short-handed, empty-net goal by the Nittany Lions sealed the 6-4 victory.

Freshman
Morgan Smith continued her hot streak after being named the WCHA Rookie of the Month for December and posted her second three-point game in three games. Smith recorded all three points (1g-2a) while on the power play that went 3-for-6 in the game. It was the first time since Sept. 24, 2022 that the Beavers scored three power-play goals.

Smith opened the scoring 6:34 into the game scoring her sixth goal of the season and fourth in three games.

The Nittany Lions responded before the period's end and with 5:57 to play, Grace Outwater evened the score. It seemed as the teams would head into the first intermission locked at one but with 6.4 seconds left,
Isa Goettl scored a power-play goal to put the Beavers back on top.

The Beavers carried the momentum into the next period and 5:48 into the second frame, senior
Genevieve Hendrickson scored her first goal of the season to put BSU up by two.

Penn State responded by scoring the next four goals during the second and third periods to take a 5-3 lead. Abby Stonehouse started the scoring streak with 9:28 in the second followed by Leah Steck who tied the game at 14:36 of the period. The Nittany Lions then took their first lead of the game 5:40 into the third period off the stick of Tessa Janecke while Outwater scored her second of the game to put PSU up by two with 9:18 to play.

Izy Fairchild stopped Penn State's scoring streak with 3:33 left to play with her second goal of the season.

Bemidji State earned a power play with 1:47 to play and pulled goaltender
Eva Filippova for the 6-on-4 advantage but with two seconds remaining, Penn State's Alyssa Machado sealed the two-goal victory with the empty-net goal.

Smith led the Beavers with her second career three-point effort while sophomore
Shelby Sandberg added two assists for her first career two-point game. Eight different Beavers recorded a point in the game.

Eva Filippova made 23 saves in the game but earns the loss falling to 0-4-0 on the season.

Bemidji State plays game two of the East/West Showcase tomorrow afternoon and will face Brown University for the first time in program history at 1:00 p.m.
