Beavers complete largest comeback in program history in win over Brown Saturday

Beavers overcome three-goal deficit for largest comeback in program history

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Bemidji State University Women's Hockey sophomore Hailey Armstrong scored twice including the game-winning goal with 43.2 seconds remaining to send the Beavers to a 5-4 comeback victory over Brown University Saturday afternoon in game two of the East/West Showcase at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn.

Bemidji State overcame a three-goal deficit with 34 minutes play to complete the program's largest comeback in its 27 seasons.

Armstrong also added an assist for her second career three-point game while seven Beavers recorded a point in the game including multi-point efforts from Armstrong, Isa Goettl (1g-1a), Morgan Smith (1g-1a) and Genevieve Hendrickson (2a).

Freshman Lauren Mooney made 16 saves for the Beavers to earn her first collegiate win in goal. She improved to 1-0-1 in just her second career start.

Two of the Beavers' five goals in the game were on the power play. Bemidji State has scored two or more power-play goals over the last two games including three power-play goals against No. 12 Penn State University yesterday. The Beavers have scored seven power-play goals (7-of-15) over the last four games including four from freshman Morgan Smith.

Bemidji State trailed early in the game when Brown's Jess Ciarrocchi scored 3:27 into the first period. Junior Raeley Carney responded with 3:57 left in the frame with her fourth goal of the season and first since Nov. 15.

The teams would head into the first intermission locked at one but the Bears (8-9-1) would fire off for three goals within the first six minutes of the middle frame. The Beavers didn't quit and at 9:31 of the frame, Smith netted her third power-play goal in two days.

Just four minutes later the Beavers gained another power-play opportunity and this time redshirt freshman Isa Goettl would capitalize scoring her fifth goal of the season with 6:19 to play in the second period to pull BSU within one.

Bemidji State would head into the second intermission with the one-goal deficit but 5:25 into the final period, sophomore Hailey Armstrong scored her seventh goal of the season to tie the game.

The score remained unchanged and seemed as the teams would need overtime to decide a winner but with 43.2 seconds remaining, Armstrong netted her second of the game and team-leading eighth goal of the season to send the Beavers to victory and complete the largest comeback in program history.

The Beavers are now 4-16-1 on the season and resume Western Collegiate Hockey Association play with a road trip to No. 2 Ohio State University next weekend (Jan. 10-11).
