BSU Women’s Hockey downs Minnesota State 3-2 in overtime behind Makenna Deering’s two goals

BEMIDJI, Minn. – Bemidji State University Women's Hockey senior defender Makenna Deering scored twice including the game-winning goal 21 seconds into overtime to power the Beavers to a 3-2 victory over Minnesota State University, Mankato Friday afternoon at Sanford Center.

The Beavers earned two points in Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings and snapped a six-game losing streak as well as a five-game losing skid to the Mavericks.

Deering potted her first career two-goal game while freshman Izy Fairchild scored her fourth goal of the season to lead the Beavers to their first win since January 4th. Sophomore Eva Filippova was dominant in between the pipes for the Beavers stopping 30-of-32 Maverick shots and collected her first win of the season.

The Beavers opened the game scoring the game's first goal when Deering netted her first of the season with a power-play goal 9:57 into the first period.

Bemidji State then went up 2-0 in the second period when Izy Fairchild cleaned up a Hailey Armstrong shot that hit the crossbar to score her fourth goal of the season 6:33 into the middle frame.

However, the Mavericks would answer before the end of the period and Whitney Tuttle tied the game herself scoring twice within the final six minutes of the period including just 1:45 between goals. She scored a power-play goal with 5:59 left in the period to pull the Mavericks within one and the 1:45 later to tie the game.

The Beavers responded in the final period limiting the Mavericks to just six shots on goal which Filippova turned aside. However, MSU's Hailey Hansen also kept the Beavers from reaching the back of the net denying all five of BSU's shots in the final 20 minutes.

But just 21 seconds into the three-on-three overtime, Deering blasted home a drop-pass from Morgan Smith while on a 3-on-2 rush sending the Beavers to victory.

Deering recorded two goals in a game for the first time in her career while Isa Goettl and Morgan Smith each earned two assists.

The Beavers will attempt at their second sweep of the season tomorrow afternoon meeting the Mavericks for game two at 2:02 p.m.
