BSU Men’s Hockey ties Michigan Tech 2-2 and earn extra point in shootout

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team and Michigan Technological University battled to a 2–2 draw after regulation and overtime Friday night in their Central Collegiate Hockey Association series opener. Bemidji State earned the extra point in the CCHA standings with a shootout victory and remain a top the league standings.

Senior Adam Flammang continued his hot start scoring in his fifth consecutive game and added an assist for his fourth multi-point effort of the season. Junior Oliver Peer found the back of the net once to score his team-leading seventh goal of the year and won 14 faceoffs, achieving a 60-percent success rate. Junior goaltender Raythan Robbins made 24 saves on 26 shots to move to 3-1-2 on the season.

The first period commenced with Bemidji State's Oliver Peer winning the opening faceoff against the Huskies' Max Koskipirtti. Bemidji State capitalized on their early momentum, taking a 1-0 lead at 11:12 when Peer found the back of the net with assists from Flammang and Patrik Satosaari. MTU answered back at 14:14 with a power-play goal by Koskipirtti, assisted by Isaac Gordon and Tyler Miller, tying the game 1-1. Both teams continued to press, but the period concluded with the score level and each side having effectively utilized their special teams.

The second period saw Bemidji State and the Huskies engage in a defensive battle, resulting in no changes to the scoreboard. MTU had several early opportunities, including a blocked shot by Brayden Boehm at 1:50 and another by Noah Reinhart at 5:22. Bemidji State's defense, led by goaltender Robbins, stood firm against MTU's power play following a high-sticking penalty at 13:53. In the closing moments, Bemidji State faced another penalty at 18:24, but the period ended without either team capitalizing on their chances.

MTU extended their lead to 2-1 early in the third period with a goal from Elias Jansson at 16:04, assisted by Stiven Sardarian and Reid Andresen. Bemidji State responded on the power play when Flammang tied the game with just 3:46 left, with assists from Kasper Magnussen and Hudson Thornton. The game remained tied at 2-2 as both teams traded missed opportunities and saves from their respective goaltenders and headed into the Beavers' NCAA leading fifth overtime of the season.

The overtime period between Bemidji State and the Huskies featured intense defensive efforts and missed opportunities from both sides. MTU's Jack Anderson fired an early shot that was saved by Robbins at 3:50, while Bemidji State's Peer and Wolfe applied pressure with multiple attempts that were saved by Bartoszkiewicz. A key moment occurred when Miller's shot hit the pipe at 1:48, narrowly missing a potential game-winner for MTU. Despite Bemidji State's persistent offense, including a blocked shot by Kalem Parker and another by Miller, neither team could break through, ending the overtime scoreless.

The shootout was decisive as Bemidji State and MTU remained tied 2–2 after regulation and overtime. Bemidji State's Vincent Labelle converted his attempt against Bartoszkiewicz, while Gordon responded for MTU, beating Robbins to keep the home team in contention. However, it was Peer who secured the win for Bemidji State, finding the net in his attempt. Robbins then stopped Jansson, sealing the victory for the visitors.

Bemidji State extended its unbeaten streak to seven games and remain undefeated in conference play. The Beavers will attempt at their fourth consecutive series sweep when the two teams meet tomorrow at 6:07 p.m. for game two.
