MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – Bemidji State University Women's Hockey freshman
Morgan Smith scored her second collegiate hat trick but the Beavers fell just short of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association series sweep of (RV) University of St. Thomas Saturday night at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.

The Beavers fell 4-3 to the Tommies and Smith became just the second BSU Women's Hockey student-athlete to record two hat tricks in a season (Erin Cody – 2010-11). The loss snapped a four-game winning streak against St. Thomas but the Beavers won the season series 3-1.

Smith started the scoring netting her first of the game with a power-play marker, her seventh of the season, with 2:34 left in the first period. Her seven power-play goals on the season are tied for the second most in a single season in Beaver Women's Hockey history and is the most by a Beaver freshman.

Smith then scored her second of the game 3:53 into the second period with an even-strength goal and her 10
th of the season to put the Beavers up two.

St. Thomas then found its legs and scored the next four goals to take a four-goal lead with 10:44 left to play.

Smith and the Beavers stopped the scoring run with 4:49 to play scoring her 11
th goal of the season, the seventh most by a Beaver freshman and her earned her 20
th point of the season to lead the team and tie for the ninth most among BSU freshman.

Sophomore
Eva Filippova started the game and held the Tommies to just one goal through 30 minutes before leaving the game due to injury. Freshman
Kaitlin Groess replaced her in the second period and made 12 saves despite earning the loss.

The Beavers will now head back to Bemidji, Minn., and prepare for their regular season finale against No. 1 University of Wisconsin at Sanford Center. BSU will be honoring its seven senior during the weekend with a special senior ceremony following game two Saturday.
