BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University Women's Hockey team tied No. 1 University of Wisconsin midway through the second period but the top-ranked Badgers scored five unanswered goals in the second and third periods to defeat the Beavers 6-1 in their Western Collegiate Hockey Association series opener at Sanford Center Friday afternoon.
Bemidji State senior Genevieve Hendricks scored the tying goal before the Badgers started their scoring flurry and was assisted by sophomores
Kate Johnson and
Riley Reeves. Freshman
Kaitlin Groess made 32 saves in a losing effort.
Wisconsin's Caroline Harvey opened the scoring with her 15th goal of the season 6:13 into the first period and the Badgers took the one-goal lead into the first intermission.
Bemidji State then responded in the second period when Hendrickson scored her third goal of the season after her, Johnson and
Isa Goettl created chaos in front of the crease while on a Beaver power play to tie the game.

The Badgers increased their pressure from then on and just under seven minutes later, Cassie Hall put the Badgers back on top. Casey O'Brien then made it 3-1 with just 2:29 remaining the middle frame.
Wisconsin continued its scoring streak in the third with Laila Edwards, O'Brien and Finley McCarthy each netting goals to claim the 6-1 victory.
The Beavers now fall to 6-27-1 (4-23-0 WCHA) and end the regular season tomorrow afternoon for game two at 2:02 p.m. The Beavers honor their seven seniors following the series finale against the Badgers.
