BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Women's Tennis team began Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play with back-to-back wins over University of Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State University Saturday and Sunday in Virginia, Minn.

The Beavers began the weekend with a commanding 5-2 victory over Minnesota Duluth Saturday afternoon and then defeated St. Cloud State 4-3 Sunday morning.

Sophie Groen,
Mia Leshem,
Valesca Rodriguez and
Lauren Rutten each went 2-0 in singles action to lead the Beavers to a pair of victories.

At No. 1 singles, Groen defeated Luana da Silva (UMD) 6-1, 6-1 and Claudia Munoz Perez (SCSU) 0-6, 6-1, 6-3. At No. 2 singles, Leshem defeated Carley Chaney 6-0, 6-0 and Johana Brower 6-1, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Rodriguez defeated Isabelle Simon 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 and Maria Paz Aoki 6-0, 6-3. And at No. 5 singles, Rutten defeated Olivia Honsey 6-6, 7-3, 7-5 and Brooklyn Broadwell 6-2, 6-0.

In doubles action, Groen and Leshem paired up for two victories while Rodriguez and Ibanez combined for one.

The Beavers improved to 3-3 on the season and now prepare for a non-conference match against University of Minnesota-Morris Friday, Feb. 28 at Gillett Wellness Center in Bemidji.
