Baker’s first collegiate event win leads Beavers at Cobber Open

Beavers earn nine top-five finishes across track and field events

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Bemidji State University Track and Field finished the 2026 Cobber Alumni Open on a high note Saturday afternoon with an event win and a total of nine top-five finishes.
 
The Beavers dominated in the field events Saturday afternoon with Hannah Baker grabbing her first collegiate event win in the women's weight throw at a distance of 15.94 meters. Baker grabbed another personal best and landed her name in the NCAA Division II rankings for the event for the second week in a row with this throw taking 69th. Her longest throw landed at over 1.3 meters farther than the second-place finisher. Joining Baker in the top five were Elle Bettcher at No. 4 and Kate Martin at No. 5. Trista Bilden lead the Beavers in shot put, finishing third with a throw of 12.12 meters, one spot ahead of freshman teammate Kate Martin in fourth with a distance of 11.72 meters. 
 
On the jumping and vaulting front, Allison LaVine marked a personal best of 1.56 meters in the high jump, finishing second in the event. Kathryn Freymiller also landed in the top five for pole vaulters at a height of 2.98 meters, taking third. Hailey Selly competed in the women's long jump, taking 12th with a distance of 4.60 meters. 
 
On the track, Amelia Congrove lead BSU in both the 200-meter and 400-meter races, finishing fifth and third, respectively. Josie Aitken and Jayden Wodarz went sixth and seventh in the 200, split by just 0.02 seconds. In the 60-meter dash preliminaries, Wodarz finished 15th with a time of 8.70 and Kathryn Freymiller competed the event for her first time, taking 18th at 8.81 seconds. 
 
BSU heads on the road to Grand Forks, N.D. next weekend for the University of North Dakota Open on Jan. 30 and 31. The multi events will kick off the event at 3 p.m. Friday with discus to follow. Saturday is for the single-events with field beginning at 11 a.m. and track races at 2 p.m.
