BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Women's Hockey team fell to St. Cloud State University, 6–2, in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association matchup Friday afternoon at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. Bemidji State took an early lead with a power-play goal in the first period and added another for a 2-0 advantage. However, St. Cloud State responded with four goals in the second period and two more in the third to secure the victory.
Kasey Senden got the game started scoring her first collegiate goal.
Hailey Armstrong scored a power-play goal and added an assist for her fifth multi-point game of the season.
Morgan Smith and
Carmen Bray each recorded assists.
Ava Hills finished with 31 saves despite allowing six goals.
The first period began with Bemidji State taking control early on, as Senden scored at 5:49 with an assist from Armstrong, giving the Beavers a 1–0 lead. Soon after, SCSU incurred a tripping penalty, and Bemidji State capitalized on the power play. Armstrong extended the lead to 2–0 at 8:07 with her 14th goal of the season, assisted by Bray and Smith. The Huskies were unable to convert on two subsequent power plays, and Hills kept the home team scoreless with several key saves.
SCSU took control in the second period, erasing a deficit with four unanswered goals to secure a lead over Bemidji State. Julianne Labbé struck twice, first at 13:17, assisted by Alice Sauriol and Sydney Lamb, and again at 12:08, with Sydney Bryant and Sauriol contributing. Sauriol then scored the game-winning goal at 8:45, assisted by Avery Farrell. Sofianna Sundelin capped the scoring with her 15th goal of the season at 4:26, assisted by Sauriol and Grace Wolfe. Despite Bemidji State's efforts, including multiple saves by Jojo Chobak, they were unable to respond offensively in the period.
The third period saw the Huskies extend their lead against Bemidji State with decisive offensive plays. At 4:49, Bryant netted a goal, assisted by Farrell, increasing the home team's lead to 5–2. Just moments later, at 3:36, Sauriol scored an even-strength goal with an assist from Maélie Pion, marking her eighth of the season and pushing the score to 6–2. Despite Bemidji State's attempts, including shots from
Talya Hendrickson and
Lola Macuiba, SCSU's defense and goaltending held firm, securing their victory as the period concluded.
The Beavers look to even the series tomorrow in game two. Puck drop is slated for 1:02 p.m.
