DULUTH, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Women's Hockey team fell to the University of Minnesota Duluth, 5–0, in their Western Collegiate Hockey Association series finale Saturday at AMSOIL Arena. Bemidji State was unable to score despite recording 26 shots on goal, including 13 in the third period.
Hailey Armstrong registered six shots on goal, leading her team in attempts.
Paige Smith excelled at the faceoff circle by winning eight of 15 draws, resulting in a 53-percent success rate.
Morgan Smith was active defensively, collecting four blocked shots while also winning 11 faceoffs. In goal,
Ava Hills recorded 28 saves, despite allowing five goals in the matchup.
The first period began with the Bulldogs gaining an early advantage on faceoffs and maintaining pressure in Bemidji State's zone. At 13:06, Caitlin Kraemer scored at even strength, assisted by Mary Kate O'Brien, putting UMD ahead 1-0. Bemidji State went on a power play with 1:13 remaining after Mahooking penalty, but they could not capitalize before the period ended. The first period concluded with UMD leading 1-0.
The Bulldogs extended their lead early in the second period when Danielle Burgen scored a short-handed goal just 14 seconds in, assisted by Kraemer and Tova Henderson. At 17:24, Madi Burr increased the margin to 3–0 with an even-strength goal, assisted by Rae Mayer and Henderson. The Bulldogs capitalized on a power play at 11:04 as Burr netted her second goal of the period, unassisted, to make it 4–0. Despite multiple attempts, Bemidji State was unable to find the back of the net, and the period ended with UMD holding a commanding lead.
The third period saw UMD extend their lead with a goal from Kate Kosobud at 13:56, assisted by Burr and Josie St. Martin. Bemidji State struggled to capitalize on offensive opportunities, with multiple shots saved by Ève Gascon, including attempts from
Lola Macuiba and
Maddie Kaiser. Despite these efforts, Bemidji State couldn't find the back of the net, and the period concluded with UMD maintaining their advantage.
The Beavers continue play on the road next weekend and travel to St. Cloud State University for a two-game league series against the Huskies.
