Thoma extends hitting streak to 22 as Beavers split doubleheader at SMSU

BSU Baseball snaps 10-game losing skid taking game one against Mustangs in Marshall

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Baseball team split its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minn., Tuesday. The day began with Bemidji State securing a 7-4 victory in the first game snapping a 10-game losing skid but the Beavers fell 4-1 in game two.
 
Junior Beau Thoma extended the second longest hitting streak in program history collecting a hit in each game to extend his hitting streak to 22, just four shy of tying the program record.
 
In game one, Bemidji State capitalized early, scoring three runs in the first inning and adding four more in the sixth. Southwest Minnesota State attempted a late comeback with two runs in the seventh, but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit. Jack Feldman contributed with two RBIs, driving in runs during a crucial moment with two outs. Beau Thoma made an impact by recording three hits, including a double, and scoring a run. Hunter Hyden added two runs and collected two hits, as well as an RBI. Matt Filippi also drove in two runs while scoring once and tallying two hits.
 
Quintin Selway started on the mound for Bemidji State, pitching 3 1/3 innings while allowing two hits, one earned run, and one walk with no strikeouts. Connor Donlin followed, pitching three innings and giving up four hits and three earned runs, while striking out one and walking one. Jack Barnett closed out the game with 2/3 of an inning, conceding one hit and two walks but not allowing any runs, while also recording a strikeout. Each pitcher faced challenges with runners on base but managed to limit the damage done by the Mustangs.
 
Jack Feldman initiated the scoring for Bemidji State in the first inning by drawing a walk and advancing to third on Beau Thoma's single. Hunter Hyden brought Feldman home with a single to left field. A wild pitch advanced the runners, and Nash Rubins grounded out to second base, allowing Thoma to score. Matt Filippi added to the inning's tally with a single through the right side, driving in Hyden. Bemidji State led 3-0 after the first inning.
 
Bemidji State extended its lead in the sixth inning. Hunter Hyden singled, followed by a bunt single from Rubins. Filippi singled through the right side, bringing Hyden home, while a fielding error allowed Rubins to score. Feldman then singled to right field, bringing in two more runs. This offensive burst gave Bemidji State a 7-2 advantage by the end of the sixth inning.
 
SMSU made a late push in the seventh inning with two runs, but Bemidji State maintained control. Lampert doubled, Cortez singled, and Davis hit an RBI single, followed by another run scored on a walk. However, Bemidji State's pitching limited further damage, securing a 7-4 victory.
 
In game two, Bemidji State fell to Southwest Minnesota State with a 4-1 loss. The lone run for Bemidji State came in the sixth inning when Noah Drusch hit a solo home run. SMSU secured the win with a two-run sixth inning and an additional run in the ninth.
 
Drusch made a notable impact by hitting a home run and driving in a run, contributing to the team's scoring efforts. Beau Thoma demonstrated defensive skill with four assists, playing a key role at shortstop. Rubins collected two hits and executed a successful sacrifice hit.
 
Lucas Ferreira started on the mound, pitching 2 2/3 innings while allowing one hit and one earned run. He walked five batters and struck out two, throwing 59 pitches, with 29 of them being strikes. Castle Huggard followed, pitching 2 2/3 innings as well, giving up three hits and two earned runs with three walks and one strikeout. Andrew Murphy closed the game with 3 2/3 innings, conceding three hits and one earned run, while walking two and striking out two, throwing a total of 60 pitches with 34 strikes.
 
SMSU scored first in the third inning when Lampert crossed home on a wild pitch after advancing to third. The score was 1-0 in favor of the Mustangs after three innings. In the sixth inning, the Mustangs added two more runs. Woitalla scored on a fielder's choice, and King scored after being caught stealing. Drusch responded for Bemidji State with a solo home run down the right-field line, bringing the score to 3-1 through six innings.
 
Bemidji State was unable to close the gap further, and the Mustangs added an insurance run in the ninth inning. Hammrich scored the final run on a single by Berreth, leading to the final score of 4-1.
 
The Beavers are now scheduled to host Minnesota State University, Mankato at BSU Baseball Field Friday-Saturday but with impending snow in the forecast, that may change.
