Minot State claims series opening doubleheader over BSU Baseball

BSU Baseball falls 13-1 and 4-2 in series opening doubleheader versus Minot State

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University baseball team faced Minot State University in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader Saturday at BSU Baseball Field, suffering a loss in both games with final scores of 13-1 and 4-2.
 
In the first game, Bemidji State managed to score its sole run in the second inning, while Minot State dominated with a decisive eight-run second inning and added two home runs over the course of the game. The Beavers totaled seven hits, including two doubles, but were unable to overcome Minot State's 16-hit performance. Matt Filippi led the team's offense with two hits and scored one run. Nash Rubins also contributed two hits and added a stolen base. Beau Thoma recorded a double and a stolen base while drawing one walk. On the mound, Carter Scanlon pitched one scoreless inning and struck out one batter.
 
Castle Huggard started on the mound for Bemidji, pitching 1 1/3 innings, allowing nine hits and nine runs, with seven earned. He gave up two home runs in his outing and threw 41 pitches, 28 of which were strikes. Ethan Biehn followed with 4 2/3 innings of relief, conceding seven hits and four earned runs, while recording one strikeout and allowing one walk. Scanlon closed the game with a scoreless inning, striking out one and not allowing any hits or walks.
 
In the second game, Bemidji State tallied 11 hits, including a double, but could not overcome a two-run seventh inning that gave Minot State the lead. Both teams had 11 hits each, but the Beavers were held scoreless in the final four innings. Jack Feldman recorded three hits and scored two runs, showcasing his effectiveness at the plate. Matt Filippi contributed with three hits, maintaining a strong presence in the lineup. Hunter Hyden added one hit and drove in a run, helping to support the team's offensive efforts. On the mound, Connor Donlin pitched two scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and keeping the opposition in check.
 
Andrew Murphy pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing 10 hits and four earned runs while striking out four batters and walking three. Murphy threw 101 pitches, with 63 of them being strikes, and surrendered one home run. Donlin provided solid relief, pitching two scoreless innings and allowing only one hit without issuing any walks. Cole Smith closed the game with 2/3 inning, not allowing a hit or a run, over 8 pitches with 6 strikes.
 
Minot State took an early lead in the second inning when M. Williamson doubled to right center and J. Orthner followed with a single up the middle, driving in Williamson. After two innings, Minot State led 1–0. Bemidji State responded in the third inning. Feldman walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Filippi singled, moving Feldman to third. Noah Drusch then singled through the right side, allowing Feldman to score and tying the game. However, Minot State regained the lead with a home run by V. Gates to right field. The third inning concluded with Minot State ahead 2–1.
 
In the fifth inning, Bemidji State tied the game again. Feldman singled, advanced to second, and then scored on a single by Hyden. The score was tied 2–2 after five innings. Minot State broke the tie in the seventh inning. Gates reached on a bunt single and advanced on a throwing error, scoring later on a single by C. Meyer. Williamson added another run with a single to left field, giving Minot State a 4–2 lead through seven innings. Despite Bemidji State's efforts, Minot State maintained its lead. The eighth and ninth innings saw no further scoring, with Bemidji State's final attempts in the ninth resulting in two singles but no runs. Minot State secured a 4–2 victory over the Beavers.
 
The Beavers close their series with Minot State with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at noon. Bemidji State will honor its 11 seniors following game two tomorrow.
