The match began with both teams demonstrating aggressive play. Bemidji State took an early lead in the third minute when
Ella Wade converted a penalty kick following a yellow card on Brooke Bellehumeur of Northwest. However, Northwest quickly responded with a penalty-kick goal by Ximena Arnau in the 10th minute, leveling the score at 1-1. Both goalkeepers,
Rozlyn Buettner for Bemidji State and Leyah Scott for Northwest, were active, with Scott making multiple saves, including a key stop on a shot by
Grace Schwoch in the 12th minute. The half concluded with the score tied, setting up a competitive second half.
Bemidji State took an early lead in the second half with
Madeline Davey scoring in the 46th minute, making the score 2-1. Despite a strong attempt from Northwest, including a shot by Arnau saved by Buettner at 52:50, Bemidji State maintained its defensive stance. The visitors struggled with accuracy, recording multiple shots off target late in the game. The half concluded with Bemidji State holding onto its narrow lead, securing the victory.
Davey scored the game-winning goal, her first of the season, and finished with one goal on two shots in 78 minutes.
Ella Wade added another goal, converting her sole shot on target.
Rozlyn Buettner, in goal, recorded four saves over 90 minutes.
Bemidji State managed to put eight of its 13 shot attempts on goal while Northwest put five shots on goal in 14 attempts. Northwest attempted five corner kicks while the Beavers attempted four.
Looking ahead, Bemidji State will host Grand Valley State on Friday, Sept. 4, at 1 p.m. CT at The Pitch in Mankato, Minnesota.
