MANKATO, Minn. — The Bemidji State University Women's Soccer team lost to No. 5 Grand Valley State University 2-1 Friday at Scheels Field in Mankato, Minn in non-conference action.
 
After both teams scored within the first 24 minutes of the match, the match was suspended due to extreme heat and later resumed that evening where neither team found the back of the net for the next 61 minutes. The Lakers broke the draw with Sonya Mehta's second goal of the game in the 85^th minute to claim victory.
 
The match began with Bemidji State generating an early shot and corner kick, but GVSU created several chances in the first half, including saves by Rozlyn Buettner on attempts from Mehta and Sarah Fromm. Mehta scored off an assist from Lina Rea at 20:42 to put the Lakers ahead 1-0, before the Beavers tied it at 1-1 at 23:53 from Maggie Kramer's first goal of the season assisted by Ella Wade.
 
The match was then suspended due to extreme heat with 19:19 remaining in the first half and later resumed at 7:00 p.m., when temperatures cooled down. The Beavers attacked right away adding corner kicks at 28:21 and 28:27, but GVSU pushed back with late pressure, including Buettner's penalty-kick save on Mehta at 32:00 and additional shots over the final stretch. Neither side scored again, and the half ended tied 1-1.
 
After an early GVSU shot missed, Meredith Paar put Bemidji State's first second-half attempt on frame at 50:19, but Macie Hunter made the save. The Lakers created a series of chances from 51:22 to 63:18, with Buettner saving attempts by Sonya Mehta, Sarah Fromm, Lina Rea and Cole Lance while several other shots went wide. The Beavers earned a corner at 76:15 and had a shot miss high moments later, but GVSU kept pressing with an Alex Williams shot saved by Buettner at 78:57 and a corner at 83:36. Mehta scored at 84:39 to put the Lakers ahead 2-1, proving to be the eventual game winner.
 
Buettner recorded nine saves over 90 minutes, making four in the first half and five in the second to set a new career high. Ella Wade tallied an assist her first of the season and leads the team with three points. Maggie Kramer scored on her only shot for her first goal of the season.
 
The Beavers end non-conference play going 1-1-1 while the Lakers improve to 2-0-1.
 
Up next, BSU travels to Sioux Falls, S.D., to face University of Sioux Falls Friday, Sept. 11 and then to Marshall, Minn., to face Southwest Minnesota State University Sept. 13.
