MARSHALL, Minn. — The Bemidji State University Women's Soccer team (2-1-2, 1-0-1) defeated Southwest Minnesota State University (0-4-1, 0-2-0) 3-0 Sunday in Marshall, Minn. After a scoreless first half, Bemidji State scored all three goals in the second half while holding the Mustangs scoreless. Emma Marzean making three saves for the shutout.
Bemidji State created the first sustained stretch of chances, with
Madisen Fritel forcing Madelyn Cory into a save at 7:36 before the Beavers earned four corner kicks from 7:48 to 13:41 and
Megan Ko sent a shot over the top. After another Bemidji State corner at 22:31 and a Mustangs attempt by Evie Boyle at 30:52, the Beavers pushed forward again as
Ella Wade had a shot saved at 32:08 and
Sydney Sutherland,
Maya Johnson and
Olivia Seurer followed with attempts. Cory later stopped shots from Seurer at 36:23 and Johnson at 42:09, and
Tatum Miller put the final Bemidji State attempt wide at 45:00 as the half ended tied 0-0.
The Beavers created the first chance of the second half when
Molly Burkstrand's shot was saved by Madelyn Cory at 46:37, and Ko converted a penalty kick at 51:00 to put Bemidji State ahead 1-0. SMSU pressed immediately with a corner kick and an Evie Boyle shot saved by
Emma Marzean, but
Gracie Waters scored at 59:00 off assists from
Maggie Kramer and Ko to extend Bemidji State's lead to 2-0. Marzean kept the margin there during a later Mustangs push, saving shots from Abigail Schmidt at 74:11 and Sophia Wilson at 81:31 around another shot and corner kick.
Meredith Paar added the final goal at 85:38 from
Myla Blake, and Bemidji State finished off a 3-0 win.
Ko scored the game-winning goal and added an assist for three points. Marzean played all 90 minutes in goal, made three saves and finished with a shutout, the first of her career. Paar scored on one of her two shots.
Gracie Waters scored on her lone shot, putting the attempt on goal.
Bemidji State improves to 2-1-2 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play while SMSU is 0-4-1 overall and 0-2-0 in conference play.
