BEMIDJI, Minn. — The Bemidji State University Women's Soccer team defeated Wayne State College 1-0 Friday at Chet Anderson Stadium. Bemidji State carried the shot advantage 22-8 and put seven attempts on goal while holding WSC to two shots on frame.
Bemidji State created the first chance 16 seconds in when
Madisen Fritel put a shot on frame that Alexa Hofstetter saved, and WSC had an attempt out top at 1:53 before Fritel missed right at 3:30. The Beavers built pressure through the middle of the half, earning corners at 8:13, 14:48 and 15:40 while generating shots from
Dayna Stocke,
Grace Schwoch,
Molly Burkstrand, Fritel,
Megan Ko and
Maggie Kramer through 15:59. After Burkstrand missed left at 19:52, Fritel forced another Hofstetter save at 29:03, and the Beavers followed with corners at 29:09, 30:10 and 37:27 along with attempts from Kramer,
Meredith Paar and
Olivia Seurer. The Wildcats had a shot go left at 32:11, but neither side scored before halftime.
BSU opened the second half with a series of chances, as
Madeline Davey and
Sydney Sutherland put shots on frame around two corner kicks before Fritel sent an attempt wide at 52:33. After
Emma Marzean saved Morgan Mancuso's shot at 54:43, Bemidji State broke through at 58:34 when Fritel scored off an assist from
Ella Wade off a corner kick for a 1-0 lead. Marzean stopped another Mancuso attempt moments later, and Bemidji State continued to create chances through Fritel, Schwoch and Ko. WSC pressed late with a corner kick and three shots between 85:33 and 88:27, but Bemidji State kept the shutout intact to finish the 1-0 win.
Fritel scored the game-winning goal and led BSU with eight shots, including four on goal.
Ella Wade recorded an assist and finished with one point. Marzean played all 90 minutes in goal, made two saves and posted a shutout, her second straight.
Bemidji State is now 3-1-2 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play. WSC is 2-4-0 overall and 1-2-0 in conference play.
