MANKATO, Minn. - The Bemidji State women’s hockey found the net in crucial situations tonight at the All Seasons Arena. The team went 3-6 in power play opportunities as Guylaine Haché netted a hat trick to give the Beavers a 6-2 win over Minnesota State University-Mankato.
After the Beavers came out of the gates flat giving up a goal to Mankato’s Tristin Stephenson just 1:41 into the first period, they settled down. Guylaine Haché made good on a pass from Amber Fryklund to beat the MSUM goaltender with just over two minutes to play in the period to bring the score to, 1-1.
The second period belonged to the Beavers. BSU took the lead, 2-1 when Lisa Peters, the Beavers all-time top scoring defensemen, scored an unassisted goal 6:51 into the period. Haché would find the net for her second goal of the game less than four minutes later (10:29) with an assist credited to Lill Raynard on the play. Bemidji State was not finished yet. They would add one more to finish the second period with a 4-1 lead over the Mavericks. Fryklund scored a short-handed, unassisted goal at the 15:53 mark of the period.
The Beavers came out if the second intermission picking up right where they left off. The Mavericks’s Amanda Osborn was called for a high sticking penalty late in the second period and would leave her team skating short-handed for the first 1:24 the third period. It would take just 26 seconds for the Beavers to take advantage of the power play to go up 5-1. Guylaine Haché would notch her second power play goal of the evening and record her first career hat trick. But Minnesota State would not let BSU celebrate the achievement responding to the quick BSU goal with one of their own. Fifty-seven seconds after the Haché goal, Kristina Koga beat the Beaver goaltender, Anik Coté, for the Maverick’s second goal of the night. At the 17:53 mark of the third period freshman Carly Napier would make sure BSU kept its four-goal lead when she scored her second goal of the season at the to make the score 6-2.
After the game BSU Head Coach Bruce Olson was pleased with the over all play of the Beavers. “We played really well for three periods tonight. It is a nice victory and we are really happy with the way everyone performed on the ice.”
With the hat trick Haché became just the seventh Bemidji State women’s player to record a hat trick. “Guylaine had an outstanding game,” commented Olson. “She played very well on the power play.”
The win brings the Beavers record to 2-3-1 over all and 1-1-0 in the WCHA. They will take the ice again tomorrow night against the same Minnesota State-Mankato team in Mankato, Minn. The puck is set to drop at 3:05 at the All Seasons Arena.
