MANKATO, Minn. - The Bemidji State women’s hockey could not capitalize on the first period momentum as
Sarah Zuelke scored her first career goal. The Beavers would not score again in the game finding it hard to get back in the flow they found themselves in during Friday’s game.
BSU ended the first period up 1-0 over the Minnesota State-Mankato Mavericks on Zuelke’s goal assisted by
Amber Fryklund. The assist for Fryklund marks six straight games with an assist for the senior center. That is the longest streak of games with an assist in her career and she ties
Kerri McEwen as the only BSU women’s players to extend an assist streak to six games.
The Mavericks came out in the second period to even the score and would do just that. At the 6:38 mark Devon Nichols scored her second goal of the season on an assist by Amber Sharratt to tie the game . At the 14:35 mark the Maverick would pull ahead when Amanda Osborn scored a goal unassisted. The goal would be the eventual game winner as the Mankato goaltender, Shari Vogt would shut the Beavers out in the final two periods making a total of 31 saves in the game.
Beginning the final period down by a goal, the Beavers just could not find the opportunities to catch up. “In the third period we were down 2-1 and ended up taking four penalties. It is hard to come back playing one player short,” commented BSU Head Coach
Bruce Olson after the loss. “It was not a very solid hockey game for us. Mankato did a nice job bottling us up and keeping us out of the passing game we had going Friday night.”
The loss drops the Beavers record to 2-4-1 over all and 1-2-0 in the WCHA. They will be in action again Nov. 1-2 when the Ohio State Buckeyes come to the John Glas Fieldhouse. Friday’s game is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. start and the puck will drop Saturday at 4:05 p.m.
