BSU Shut Out By No. 9 Wisconsin 4-0

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team battled the No. 9 University of Wisconsin Badgers at the John Glas Fieldhouse for the second-straight day. After taking the Badgers to overtime in the previous night, the Beavers looked flat and were not ever able to get any offense generated.

Bemidji State came out off the gates a little slow getting out shot 17-1 in the first period. But though the team struggled to get on the board, the Beavers only trailed the Badgers 1-0 after the first period. “I am not sure why we came out so slow. We just were not ready to play and you can’t afford to come into a game like that,” commented BSU head coach Bruce Olson.

Wisconsin went up 1-0 at the 5:38 mark of the first period when Jackie Friesen scored her 10th goal of the season off assists from Amy Vermeulen and Kathryn Greaves.

The Beavers came out of the first intermission with some spring in their step, controlling the puck for most of the second period. They out shot the Badgers 12-7 in the period, but were never able to find the net. The teams best scoring opportunity came at the 5:18 mark of the period. Nicole Uliasz was sent to the box after being called for a hooking penalty and the Beavers went on the power play. Just 60 second later, Wisconsin’s Kerry Weiland was called for checking as the Beavers took the two-player advantage for one minute. During the power play Bemidji State was only able to muster five shots on goal. Wisconsin on the other hand, took full advantage of the BSU mistakes, scoring two power goals.

Meghan Hunter scored the first at the 8:58 mark of the period with help from Steph Millar and Sis Paulsen. At the 11:08 mark Hunter would again beat Anik Coté while BSU was short-handed. Sis Paulsen added her second assist of the game on the play. The Beavers trailed 3-0 at the end of two period of play.

The third period belonged to the Badgers as Kendra Antony added another power play goal and the Badgers took the game and two WCHA points, 4-0. Jackie MacMillan made 14 saves in the game recording her 15 th career shut out and second in the Badgers last three games. The Badgers continue to dominate the series against the Beavers going 14-1-1 all-time.

The loss drops the Beavers record to 5-6-3 over all and 3-4-3 in the WCHA. The teams will back in action Dec. 13 and 14 as they take on the No. 2 University of Minnesota-Duluth in a home and home series. Friday’s game will take place at the John Glas Fieldhouse beginning at 7:05 p.m. Saturday the teams will travel to Duluth. The puck is set to drop at the DECC at 7:05 p.m.
