BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State soccer team knocked off
Northern State 1-0 in overtime this afternoon, marking its
first victory over the Wolves. Northern State is now 1-9-0
against the Beavers. The Wolves came into the match with an
undefeated record of 8-0-1 overall and 2-0 in Northern Sun
Intercollegiate Conference play.
The Beavers compiled a strong defensive showing in the first
half and the two teams were tied 0-0 at halftime.
The second half was more of the same as both teams were unable
to put any goals on the board during regulation.
The match would stay scoreless until the 94th minute in overtime
when freshman Mary Stoltz took a cross from freshman Whitney
Sengthao and beat goalkeeper Emily Herbst to give the Beavers
the 1-0 victory.
Head coach Jim Stone believes this game marks a monumental
day in BSU soccer history.
“This is Bemidji State’s biggest victory in the
history of the program,” Stone said, “With Northern
State’s unbeaten record, its strong history against
us, and its position in the conference this game means a lot
to our team.”
Although the win was a team effort, Stone felt several players
played especially well for the Beavers.
“Erin Foss, Cristina Egnell, Nikki Cleveland and Tegan
Moehn all played unbelievable for us today,” Stone said.
Goalkeeper Kari Torgerson finished with her third shutout
of the season.
BSU is now 2-8-1 overall and 1-2-0 in NSIC play. The Beavers
will not have much time to enjoy today’s victory as
they will be in action again Sunday afternoon against Winona
State. Start time is 1:00 p.m. at the BSU Soccer Field.
