BEMIDJI, Minn. - Bemidji State hosted the No. 2 University of Minnesota-Duluth in the final home game of its 2003 season. The Bulldogs out shot the Beavers 51-14 en rout to a 10-0 shut out.
Maria Rooth broke the scoreless tie at the 9:10 mark of the first when she put a Julian Vasichek rebound back in the upper left corner, over the down BSU goaltender. Erika Holst was also credited with an assist on the play. Holst scored a goal of her own at the 12:59 mark of the frame with assists from Caroline Ouellette and Vasichek to put the Bulldogs up by two. Satu Kiipeli scored the final goal of the first period at the 18:37 mark, when she wound up from the point with a slapshot that found its way past
Bre Dedrickson for the UMD goal.
The Bulldogs would continue their scoring barrage just 8 seconds into the second period when Ouellette recorded her second point off the game on a goal with help from Jenny Hempel and Tracia Guest. Less that a minute later (1:06) Minnesota-Duluth would increase their lead to five when Hanne Sikio scored her 20th of the season from Jenny Potter.
At 5:17 of the third stanza, Maria Rooth would cement her name in the University of Minnesota-Duluth record books as she was credited with the first assist to Ouellette’s second goal of the game giving Rooth 222 career points. She is now tied with Dan Lempe (1976-80) for the all-time school record for career-points.
Jenny Potter netted her 29th goal of the season at the 17:57 mark of the second period when she took the puck and sliced through the Bemidji State defense and put it in the net.
Navada Russel put the Bulldogs up 8-0 with 43 seconds remaining the second stanza. She was assisted on the play by Nora Tallus.
After two periods of play, Bre Dedrickson was replaced in net by
Jill Luebke. Dedrickson recorded 23 saves in the game.
The third period belonged to UMD’s Larissa Luther. She recorded two shots and both would find the back of the net giving the Bulldogs a 10-0 victory over the Beavers.
Shannon Kasparek made 14 saves in the game for UMD collecting her first shut out of the season for her fourth win. In 20 minutes of play in the third, Luebke recorded 18 saves for BSU.
The loss drops Bemidji State to 9-14-6 on the season and 5-11-5 in the WCHA. Tomorrow the same teams will again face each other as they will travel to Duluth, Minn. to play the second game of the home-and-home series in the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center. The puck is set to drop at 2:05 p.m.
