MADISON, Wis. - For the second-consecutive day, the No. 6 University of Wisconsin scored five goals to gain Western Collegiate Hockey Conference victory versus Bemidji State. Today, Sis Paulsen scored two goals and collected an assist to lead the Badgers to 5-3 win and completion of a WCHA series sweep of the Beavers.
The Beavers and Badgers played even hockey until BSU put Wisconsin on a five-on-three advantage with 1:30 to play in the period. The Badgers would capitalize 78 seconds into the power-play as sophomore forward Amy Vermeulen beat
Bre Dedrickson for the go ahead goal with assists from Sis Paulsen and Kerry Weiland.
Although the Beavers out shot the Badgers 9-5 in the second period, the Badgers would make good on two of their five shots. Paulsen would notch her second point of the game and fourth of the series when she scored at the 7:07 mark of the frame to put Wisconsin up two, 2-0. Less than three minutes later (10:02), the Badgers would raise their lead to three goals when Kendra Antony collected her 12th goal of the season with help from Kathryn Greaves and Nikki Burish. The goal would end the afternoon for Dedrickson as freshman
Jill Luebke took her place between the pipes for the Beavers.
Bemidji State would light up its side of the scoreboard 11:09 into the second when
Caesare Stimson found herself in the right place at the right time putting back the second rebound off Wisconsin’s Jackie MacMillan for her fourth goal of the season.
Amber Fryklund and
Lill Raynard we credited with assists on then play after each fired a shot that was deflected by the Badgers goaltender.
Wisconsin would regain its three-goal when Kathy Devereaux collected her second tally of the series 5:21 into the third stanza. At the 15:58 point, the Badgers would increase their lead to 5-1 when Sis Paulsen found the back of the net for the second time in the game. Her slap-shot from the point found its way past Luebke to close the scoring and give Wisconsin the game and its second series sweep in as many weekends. The Badgers also inked their place as the third seed in the WCHA post-season tournament taking four points out of the series and widening the gap between them, the fourth place Beavers and the rest of pack.
The Badger's MacMillan made 16 saves in her 16th win of the season bringing her season totals to 16-6-5. Dedrickson was credited with the loss playing 30:02, allowing three goals and while making 14 saves.
The loss drops BSU’s overall record to 7-13-6 and 5-10-5 in WCHA competition. The Beavers will return home next weekend to play host to the University of Findlay (9-16-1 / 1-4-0 CHA) in the John Glas Fieldhouse. The non-conference battle will begin Friday night with its start slated for 7:05 p.m. and will continue Saturday with the puck set to drop at 4:05 p.m.
