MADISON, Wis. - Bemidji State’s women’s hockey team suffered its second setback of the weekend on Sunday afternoon, after the No. 4 Wisconsin Badgers dealt the Beavers a 4-0 loss at the Kohl Center.
“We gave them a couple of easy goals and fell behind early, but we played a lot better after that,” Bemidji State head coach Bruce Olson said after Sunday’s game. “The girls worked a lot harder and made it much tougher for Wisconsin to move the puck.”
BSU enjoyed sparkling goaltending from freshman Emily Brookshaw (Webster, Wis.), who turned aside 38 of 42 Wisconsin shots in her first collegiate start. Brookshaw held the dynamic Badger offense to four goals, its lowest output of the season.
“I thought she looked real solid,” Olson said of the young goaltender. “She looked real comfortable in net, controlled her rebounds, and made a lot of nice saves.”
Wisconsin’s Sharon Cole scored the game-winning goal just 1:50 into the game, connecting on a shorthanded marker with help from Lindsay Macy. Jackie Friesen, Grace Hutchins, and Carla MacLeod each added goals for the Badgers. After giving up four goals with the man advantage on Saturday on just six opportunities, BSU buckled down and stymied the Badger power play four out of five times on Sunday afternoon.
The loss drops Bemidji State’s overall record to 1-3-0 and its WCHA record to 0-2-0. The Beavers sit tied for 6th place in the conference with Minnesota State and North Dakota.
The schedule gets no easier for BSU, as the nation’s top-ranked team will pay a visit to the John S. Glas Fieldhouse next weekend. Game times for the two-game series against the University of Minnesota are slated for 2:05 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.
