BEMIDJI, Minn. - Paced by Caroline Ouellette’s hat trick, No. 4 Minnesota Duluth (4-0-1, 4-0-1 WCHA) handed the Bemidji State women’s hockey team (1-6-0, 0-5-0 WCHA) a 6-0 setback Friday night at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs have now defeated the Beavers in 10 consecutive contests.

Minnesota Duluth constructed a 7-5 shot advantage in the opening period of play and the Bulldogs tallied two goals on their first three shots on goal. Jessica Koizumi put the visitors on the board at 5:32 of the first period off an assist from Caroline Ouellette. UMD added its second goal of the period just over two minutes later when Nora Tallus converted one of Minnesota Duluth’s three power-play goals on the evening.

The Bulldogs turned up the pressure in the second stanza, scoring three lamplighters in a span of less than five minutes on 15 shots. Samantha tallied her first goal of the season at the 10:13 mark, while Ouellette netted a pair of power-play markers at 13:12 and 14:55 to give the visitors a commanding 5-0 lead after two frames.

Freshman goaltender Emily Brookshaw (Webster, Wis.) relieved junior Jill Luebke (Neenah, Wis.) after UMD’s fifth goal. Luebke collected 16 shots on the evening, marking her lowest save-total of the year.

Brookshaw turned aside 10 of the 11 shots she faced in the final 25:05 of the game, but Ouellette recorded her third tally of the game at the 8:22 mark of the final period, giving her seven goals and 11 assists this season. Ouellette is the first player to score a hat trick against the Beavers since March 6, 2004, when Wisconsin's Jackie Friesen equaled her performance in Madison, Wis.

Sophomore Riitta Schaublin stopped 21 shots in garnering her third win and second shutout of the 2004-05 campaign for the Bulldogs.

Bemidji State was outshot 32-21 in the contest.

The Beavers continued to struggle on the power-play, finishing the night 0-7. BSU has now been held scoreless in 27 straight power-play opportunities. UMD, however, notched three goals on five chances with a player advantage.

Bemidji State will seek a series split with Minnesota Duluth Saturday at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse. The puck will drop at 2:05 p.m.
