Ohio State Sweeps Bemidji State With 4-2 Triumph

COLUMBUS, Ohio - For the second consecutive game, Ohio State (8-5-1, 7-5-0 WCHA) recorded three goals in the final period, allowing the Buckeyes to stake a 4-2 win and series sweep of the Bemidji State women’s hockey team (2-12-0, 1-11-0 WCHA) Sunday afternoon at the OSU Ice Rink. Freshman Tara Hiscock (Bemidji, Minn.) collected a goal and an assist in the game and finished the weekend with three points.

Both teams scored a goal in the first period with the Beavers getting on the board first. Senior Jenny Schnickel (Coon Rapids, Minn.) scored a power-play goal, her first of the season and second point of the series at 5:18. Tara Hiscock was credited with her third assist of the year on the goal.

Ohio State tied the game with a player advantage at 16:57 off a tally from Meaghan Mulvaney.

BSU outshot OSU 9-7 in the opening stanza.

In the second period, Ohio State was awarded a penalty shot as a result of Laura Lankton (Houghton, Mich.) holding the puck in the crease at the 4:00 mark. Jana Harrigan attempted the shot for the Buckeyes, but was denied by junior goalkeeper Jill Luebke (Neenah, Wis.).

Bemidji State took a 2-1 lead when Hiscock scored her second goal of the series and second point of the game at the 5:08 mark. With her three-point effort on Friday and Sunday Hiscock moved into third on the team in scoring (4-3=7) and solidified the top spot among BSU rookies in points. Sophomores Helena Tageson (Malmö, Sweden) and Nina Ziegenhals (Sankt Augustin, Germany) each picked up helpers on Hiscock’s score. Tageson’s assist was her fourth of the year, whle Ziegenhals earned her first point of the season with her assist.

The Buckeyes outshot the Beavers 13-2 in the second stanza.

Much like Friday’s game, OSU came to play in the final frame, as the home team scored three times in the last 10 minutes of the contest. Mulvaney tied the game with her second marker of the game, an unassisted goal at 11:35, while Jeni Creary secured the game-winning goal at 15:22.

BSU head coach Bruce Olson pulled Luebke late in the period in an attempt to tie the game, but Jana Harrigan took advantage of the opportunity, scoring an empty-net goal for the Buckeyes at 19:32 to put a close to a sweep of the Beavers.

Luebke recorded 28 saves in 59:11 in net for the Green and White, while Ohio State’s netminder Melissa Glaser made 20 saves in 59:53.

Ohio State outshot Bemidji State 32-22 on the day.

Both teams finished 1-for-3 on the power play.
