BSU Falls to Winona State in NSIC Semifinal Round

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The No. 5 Bemidji State University soccer team was shut out of its quest for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament Championship Saturday, as the No. 1 seed Winona State University used a two-goal performance from 2004 NSIC Co-Player of the Year, Amy Budish, to take the semifinal game, 2-0.

BSU's sophomore goalkeeper Kari Torgerson (New Hope, Minn.) did her best to keep the Beavers’ tournament crown hopes alive making a season-high 16 saves on the day including stopping seven in the first half to keep Winona State off the scoreboard.

Despite the 0-0 tie in the first stanza, the Warriors dominated the half of play outshooting BSU by a 16-3 margin. Sophomore Katie Meinhardt (Maple Grove, Minn.) recorded the Beavers’ only shot on goal in the final moments of the half.

It took WSU just 2:36 into the second half to gain a 1-0 advantage. Budish took a pass from Kayla Walters, found a seam in the BSU defensive corps and lofted a ball just out of the reach of Torgerson to land the back of the net.

Budish put the game out of reach for BSU scoring her second goal of the game in the 87th minute.

Torgerson’s season-high save total came on 35 WSU shots as the Warriors outshot the Beavers 35-4 in the game.

The WSU goalkeeper made one save in the shutout.

“Today we saw why Winona is the best team in the conference and one of the best in the region.” BSU head coach Jim Stone commented after the game. “Late in the game we were in position to steal the match but we were just unable to get anything going offensively. I thought we played hard. I am proud of our girls.”

The loss evens Bemidji States' overall record to 11-11 overall while they were 3-4 in NSIC play. BSU will be back in action Sunday as they take on the loser of the Wayne State College/Southwest Minnesota State University game in a 12:00 p.m. start at the University of Minnesota’s Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
