DENVER, Colo. – The Bemidji State University women's basketball
team was defeated 74-51 by Regis University in the team's
final game of the Coors Classic Saturday night in Denver,
Colo. BSU sophomore Nancy McConkey (Superior,
Wis.) equaled a career-high 17 points on 7-of-8 from the field
and 3-for-7 from the line as BSU dropped its fourth consecutive
game.
The Beavers came out flat missing its first three shots and
committing four turnovers in the first four minutes of play
while Regis took full advantage rattling off 13 straight point
to take a 13-0 lead. Freshman Danielle Srock
(Faribault, Minn.) ended the Beaver's four-minute and 15-second
scoring drought hauling in a missed BSU jumper and putting
it back for two points (13-2). But BSU would never be able
to climb back into the game, spotting the Rangers 13 points
to begin the game was too big a deficit to overcome.
The Rangers went on to extend their lead to 15 points as
the halftime horn sounded, holding BSU to its lowest first
half point total since BSU managed just 16 points Feb. 26th
of last season versus Minnesota Duluth and practically doubling
the Beavers' score at the break, 32-17.
Although the Beavers held a 15-14 edge on the glass, they
converted just 7-of-20 total attempts (35.0 percent) and were
outshot at the free-throw line 3-of-9 (33.3 percent) to 10-of-12
(83.3 percent).
McConkey connected on her first two shots of the second half
to bring BSU back to within 13 points (34-21), but RU's Lindsey
Viall would spark a Ranger run hitting a trio of three-pointers
while adding an assist as Regis extended its advantage to
22 points (53-31) with just over 10 minutes to play in the
game.
BSU crept to within 18 points of the Rangers (64-46) with
3:16 to play but RU would slam the door on the Beavers scoring
the next ten points including four free-throws.
BSU was 19-of-41 from the field (46.3 percent) failing to
make a three-point field goal (0-7) for the first time since
Dec. 4, 2002--two years ago to the day. BSU committed 25 turnovers
and finished the game in a 27-27 deadlock on the boards.
McConkey's 17 points paced the Beavers while she also posted
a team-high six rebounds. Senior Serena Nalls
(St. Paul, Minn.) and freshman Karlee Simonson
(Rockford, Minn.) each added nine points while Nalls tied
a career-best three blocks to lead the Beavers in the paint.
The Rangers were led by Viall who tallied 18 points and three
assists in the game. Denise Lopez pulled down a game-high
11 rebounds for RU.
The loss drops the Beavers to 2-6 overall. Bemidji State will
be in action again Friday (Dec. 10) when it travels to Grand
Forks, N.D. to take on the University of North Dakota in a
6:00 p.m. tip-off at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
