BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Minnesota State University-Moorhead women's
basketball (12-3; 3-0 NSIC) team outscored Bemidji State (3-12;
0-3 NSIC) by a 28-6 margin in the final 10 minutes of the
first half to take an 18-point advantage (35-17) into the
locker room as the Dragons went on to hand the Beavers their
third conference loss of the season 70-38.
The Dragon defense held BSU to a season-low 28.3 percent
from the floor and held the team to its lowest scoring output
since Southwest Minnesota State stymied the BSU offense for
30 points Feb. 23, 2001.
Serena Nalls (St. Paul, Minn.) got BSU on the board first
hitting the Beavers' first jumpers of the game, but the lead
would be short-lived as the MSU-Moorhead scored the next six
points unanswered and would not trail again.
MSU-Moorhead shot 47.8 percent (22-46) in the game outscoring
the Beavers 20-7 at the line.
Maggie Gernbacher (Bloomington, Minn.) paced the Beavers
totaling 15 points on 7-of-15 from the field and 1-of-5 from
beyond the arc. Freshman Stephanie Peterson crashed the glass
for a game-high seven boards.
The Dragons were led by Dana Weibel and Allison Swenson who
each collected 12 points. Jenny Thon grabbed a team-high six
rebounds as MSUM pulled down a 38-32 rebounding edge.
BSU is now 3-12 on the season and 0-3 in NSIC play marking
the first time since 2001 that the Beavers have posted three
consecutive losses to kick-off the conference season. The
team will be back in action again tomorrow (Jan. 15) when
it welcomes Northern State University to the BSU Gymnasium
for a 6:00 p.m. NSIC tilt.
