WAYNE, Neb. – Despite rediscovering its offense Sunday at the
Rice Center in Wayne, Neb., the Bemidji State University women's
basketball team was defeated 70-59 by Wayne State College.
A big reason the team registered its largest offensive output
since scoring 59 points Jan. 7th versus Concordia-St. Paul
was the play of sophomore forward Nancy McConkey
(Superior, Wis.). Hitting five of her seven field goal attempts
and shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the line, McConkey netted
15 points to lead the Beavers.
BSU toyed with the lead during the first seven minutes of
play but Wayne State's Amanda Covington converted a three-point
play with 13:04 to go in the first half to spur a 12-2 run
for the Wildcats and give them a 16-8 lead.
The Beavers would battle back midway through the second half
coming as close as three points (36-33) and again with just
over three minutes to go (56-53) but the Wildcats would drain
8-of-10 free throws down the stretch and get two key threes
from Nicole Gruntorad to ice the win.
In addition to BSU's 15-point night from McConkey, senior
Allison Sanderberg (Duluth, Minn.) and sophomore
Maggie Gernbacher (Bloomington, Minn.) scored
13 and 12 points respectively to top the scoring list for
BSU. Freshman Stephanie Peterson (Bismarck,
N.D.) pulled down seven rebounds as BSU lost the battle for
the boards, 31-28.
Wayne State was led by Gruntorad who totaled a game-high 21
points. Humphries added 15 and Erin McCormick scored 11 points.
Allison Steffen hauled in a game-high nine boards as the Wildcats'
top rebounder.
Tonight's game originally scheduled for Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
but was moved to Sunday at 6:00 p.m. as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference postponed all of its games this weekend due to
inclimate weather.
BSU falls to 3-15 on the season and 0-6 in NSIC play marking
the first time since the 1981-82 season, a year in which the
team was 0-14 in league play, that Bemidji State has posted
six consecutive losses to begin a conference season. The team
will be back in action Saturday when it travels to Crookston,
Minn. to battle the University of Minnesota-Crookston in a
6:00 p.m. tip-off.
