DULUTH, Minn. - The weekend series at Minnesota Duluth concluded Sunday for Bemidji State with a 4-0 loss to the third-ranked Bulldogs. Paced by two goals and an assist from Caroline Ouellette, UMD (20-2-2, 18-2-2 WCHA) outshot the Beavers (6-18-2, 2-17-2 WCHA) heavily, 39-18.
The Duluth charge started in the first period with two goals. The 2-0 lead was formed by markers from Jessica Koizumi and Karine Demeule. The two goal advantage by the Bulldogs was reflective of the large difference in shots as Minnesota Duluth outshot the Beavers 18-4 in the opening period. Emily Brookshaw (Fr.; Webster, Wis.) had 16 saves in the period.
A similar shot advantage (11-4) in the second period led to a short-handed goal by the Bulldog”s Caroline Ouellette ran the Minnesota Duluth lead up to 3-0.
Riding a four-game winning streak Minnesota Duluth added a third period goal to run the streak up to five games without a loss or tie. The goal was put in the net by Caroline Ouellette, who ended up with three points on the day (2g, 1a) and eight points (4g, 4a) in the weekend series versus the Beavers. Also, teammate Jessica Koizumi’s goal and assist on Sunday ran her point total up six (3g, 3a) on the weekend.
The Beavers mustered up 10 shots on goal in the third period, but were unable to get on the scoreboard.
The shutout brought Kate Robinson’s two-game point scoring streak to an end. The Beaver special teams were a bright spot as BSU didn’t allow a power play goal in seven attempts with a player advantage by the Bulldogs.
Senior Patricia Elsmore recorded the shutout in her first start of the season, and first appearance since March 23, 2003. She stone-walled all 18 shots managed by Bemidji State. Her record is now 1-0-0 for the season.
Brookshaw made 35 stops while picking up the loss to drop her season record to 3-7-1.
Bemidji State has now lost thirteen games in a row to Minnesota Duluth. Of the last eight games the Bulldogs have managed to shutout the Beavers six times.
After the four-game road swing the Beavers will be back at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse on February 4-5 to take on the Buckeyes from Ohio State University. Both games are slated for 2:05 p.m.
