MINNEAPOLIS , Minn. - Behind a stellar 39-save performance from junior netminder Jill Luebke (Neenah, Wis.), the Bemidji State women's hockey team (5-15-1, 1-14-0 WCHA) held No. 1 Minnesota (16-1-2, 13-0-2 WCHA) to its lowest scoring output of the season Friday night at Ridder Arena. However, the Golden Gophers recorded a 2-0 win and snapped the Beavers four-game unbeaten streak in the process.
Minnesota's explosive offense started strong, tallying a pair of goals on 16 shots in the opening period of play. The nation's leading scorer, Natalie Darwitz, recorded her 21st goal of the year and provided what proved to be the game-winning marker at 7:08. The UM built a 2-0 lead just over four minutes later when Andrea Nichols tallied her sixth goal of the season.
Despite carrying a 25-16 shot advantage in the final two periods of regulation, the Golden Gophers were unable to solve Luebke for the remainder of the contest. Luebke finished with her second-highest save total of the 2005-05 campaign, after she made 46 saves in BSU's 2-1 season-opening win at Mercyhurst Oct. 10.
The two teams each compiled 11 shots on goal in the final stanza and Bemidji State made one final effort to get on the scoreboard with 1:08 left on the clock, as head coach Bruce Olson pulled Luebke for the extra skater. Unfortunately for the Beavers, Minnesota goaltender Brenda Reinen closed the door any comeback attempts and the Golden Gophers held on with a two-goal victory.
Reinen finished the evening with 19 saves and improved her record to 5-0-0, while Luebke dropped to 3-10-0 on the season.
Minnesota ended the game with a 41-19 shot advantage and both teams were shut out on the power play.
Bemidji State will look to salvage a split with Minnesota Saturday afternoon at Ridder Arena. Opening face-off is set for 2:05 p.m.
