WINONA, Minn. - The Bemidji State University
soccer played Northern State to a tight match in the semifinal
round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament.
The Beavers were unable to hold on as the Wolves notched a
late goal to upset the higher-seeded Bemidji State.
The Beavers controlled the pace for much of the scoreless
first half, keeping pressure on the Northern State offense.
The BSU backiners allowed just one shot on goal in the half,
with the only shot coming on a direct kick after a Bemidji
State foul. The offensive charge for the Beavers managed two
shots on goal.
The BSU defense held strong until the 16th minute when Northern
State’s Larissa Strychun got free and took a feed from
Liz Malatesta to slip the ball by Bemidji State goalkeeper
Kari Torgerson (Jr.; New Hope, Minn.) for a 1-0 NSU lead.
Torgerson collected eight saves in the loss for BSU dropping
her season record to 11-3-5. Seven of Torgerson’s eight
saves came in the second half.
Northern State’s Kirstin Kitto collected all four BSU
shots on goal and gained the win for the Wolves.
BSU will play its final game of the 2005 season tomorrow in
the NSIC Third Place game against Wayne State, who lost the
other semifinal earlier in the day to defending champion Winona
State 1-0. The Beavers tied Wayne State in Bemidji on Sep.
25 and then beat them 2-1 later in the season on Oct. 8 in
Wayne, Neb.
