BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University's Maggie Gernbacher drained
a school record nine three-pointers en route to a game-high
30 points in an 89-62 victory over visiting Jamestown College
in head coach Mike Curfman's home debut. The Beavers shot
a blistering 52 percent from the field while holding the Jimmies
to just 36 percent shooting.
Despite Gernbacher's 30 points, the Beavers
also had three more players in double digits as freshman Heidi
Matzke (G, Red Lake Falls, Minn.) posted 13, Amy Lawson (So.,
PG, Spencer, Iowa) dropped in 11 more and sophomore Stephanie
Peterson (C, Bismarck, N.D.) added her third double-double
of the season with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Jamestown College was led in scoring by Megan
Clark who scored 22 points via five three-pointers. Brietta
Bowerman and Lindsey each contributed 10 points for the Jimmies.
"We played well on both ends of the
floor. Our defensive intensity was strong, which led us to
some fast break points to pick up some baskets in transition,"
commented Curfman after the game.
The Beavers took a 10-point lead (41-31)
into the first half on the back of a 10-2 run in the closing
minutes. The run was highlighted by fastbreak buckets from
Matzke and Lawson and solid rebounding from Peterson whose
double-double marked the second time in as many games.
Gernbacher posted nine points, while Peterson
dropped eight and grabbed seven rebounds in the half.
The Beavers broke open the game early in
the second half outscoring Jamestown 28-6 during a 10-minute
stretch in which Gernbacher hit three consecutive shots from
beyond the arc, on her way to knocking down seven threes in
the half.
BSU's lead would grow to as many as 37 points
(87-50) on another three-ball by Gernbacher with 4:13 left
to play in regulation.
The Beavers took home an 89-62 victory gain their second consecutive
victory. The back-to-back wins marked the first time for the
program since the 2003-04 squad won games on Feb. 26, 2004
and Mar. 3, 2004.
The win also moved the BSU all-time home
debut record to 3-6, as Curfman is the ninth coach in the
history of the program.
"If we can get that kind of balance
with the good post play and point guard play along with strong
finishing from our guards, it going to be a fun year,"
said Curfman.
Bemidji State's record moves to 2-4 on year, while JC dropped
to 4-5. Tomorrow, BSU will play its second consecutive Dakota
Athletic Conference opponent as they host Dakota State University.
The matchup will be the first in the history of BSU women's
basketball. Tip-off is slated for 4:00 p.m. in the BSU Gymnasium.
