[box score]

BEMIDJI, Minn. - A brilliant performance in net by Emily Brookshaw (Fr.; Webster, Wis.) and Carly Napier’s first career hat trick lead Bemidji State (7-20-2, 3-19-1 WCHA) to its first win in five games. The shutout was second of the 2004-05 campaign for the rookie Brookshaw.

Sharing the spotlight on this night was also Carly Napier (Jr.; Toronto, Ont.). Napier scored three goals, the first of which came with just 3:15 to play in the first period. Junior Sarah Zuelke (Chaska, Minn.) and freshman Tara Hiscock (Fr.; Bemidji, Minn.) each picked up an assist on the goal the would eventually prove to be the game-winner.

A solid defense by the Beavers and strong goaltending held Minnesota State to just four shots and no goals in each the first two periods. The Beavers were also held scoreless in the second period while managing ten shots on goal.

Penalties marked much of the third period, but neither team was able to capitalize in the man-advantage situation. The scored remained 1-0 until Napier shot the puck past MSU goaltender Laura Brennan on a feed from Sarah Zuelke. The assist was Zuelke’s second of the game and marked the defenseman’s first career multi-point performance. It also continued her success all-time versus the Mavericks running her career head-to-head point total to five (2g, 3a).

Brookshaw continued to sparkle throughout the third period. The freshman netminder stopped eight shots in the period and forced the Mavericks into an extra-attacker situation for the last 45 seconds.

Carly Napier picked up her hat trick for the night scoring and empty net goal with just 12 seconds to play giving the Beavers a 3-0 shutout victory. Kelly Hart (Ajax, Ont.) gathered the assist.

The Beavers took control of the game outshooting Minnesota State 29-16 and holding the Mavericks scoreless in all three power-play attempts.

Emily Brookshaw flawless performance moved her season record up to 4-9-1, as she stonewalled 16 shots on goal by the Mavericks.

With her second shutout of the season, Brookshaw nabbed herself a spot in the Beaver record books becoming the first in school history to record to shutouts in a season and now ranks second on the all-time career shutouts list as a freshman. Brookshaw shutout St. Cloud State earlier this season, stopping 24 shots in a 2-0 victory on Jan. 15.

Carly Napier also marked her spot in the Beaver record books. Her three goals on the evening was the first hat trick for Bemidji State since Nikki Eckebrecht scored three goals in a 6-4 loss at North Dakota on Nov. 7, 2004. Napier’s last goal of the night also moved her into a tie for third place on the all-time Beaver goal-scoring list with current teammate Kelly Hart and former Beaver Lill Raynard at 17 career goals.

Also continuing her career success against Minnesota State, Napier has now scored eight of her 17 career goals against MSU while picking up her fourth multi-point performance of the season and sixth of her career.

Bemidji State will be in action again tomorrow afternoon at 3:05 p.m. to play game two of a weekend set versus Minnesota State. The Beavers will be looking for their first sweep on the road since a weekend series at Wayne State on Dec. 3-4, 2004.
