Brookshaw and Beavers Shutout Mavericks 1-0, Complete Sweep of Minnesota State

Feb. 12, 2005

[box score]

BEMIDJI, Minn. – For the second straight night rookie goaltender Emily Brookshaw (Webster, Wis.) turned a flawless performance against the Minnesota State Mavericks (8-15-6, 7-13-3 WCHA) and with the help of her defense gained a 1-0 shutout victory.

The Beavers turned in another stifling performance Saturday afternoon in front of 265 fans at the All Seasons Arena in Mankato, Minn.  Bemidji State outshot the Mavericks 31-19 and held them scoreless on all three power-play attempts.

A game filled with penalties for the home team, proved to be the difference.  Bemidji State’s Tara Hiscock (Fr.; Bemidji, Minn.) took a feed from Kelly Hart and scored the lone goal of the match on a Beaver power-play with just 6:58 remaining.  The marker was Hiscock’s team-leading sixth power-play goal of the season.  The game-winner for the freshman also started a two-game point scoring streak as she had an assist in last night’s contest.

The spotlight, however, was nabbed by Brookshaw.  The former Let’s Play Hockey 2004 Senior Goalie of the Year, turned away all 19 Maverick shots on goal including nine in the third period.

Brookshaw also continued to rewrite Beaver record books. After becoming the first goalie in BSU women’s hockey history to record two shutouts in a season, she picked up her third while moving into a tie with Bre Dedrickson for most shutouts in a career (3).

The Webster, Wis., native also broke former Beaver Laura Pogreba’s record for longest shutout sequence of 106:31 as her current streak is up to 122:38.  Today’s win also put Brookshaw into a fourth-place tie with Anik Cote for wins in a season with five.

Maverick goalie Laura Brennan played solid in net while turning away 30 of 31 shots, but picked up the loss to move her record to 3-9-5 on the season.

Brookshaw’s shutout improved her record to 5-9-1.

This road sweep for the Beavers was the first since Dec. 3-4, 2004 at Wayne State.

Bemidji State will bring its two-game win streak back home to the John S. Glas Fieldhouse to take on #4 Wisconsin on Feb. 18-19 with both games slated for 2:05 p.m.
