BEMIDJI, Minn. - Despite lighting the scoreboard twice in the final frame, Bemidji State (6-20-1, 2-19-2 WCHA) gave up a goal with just 4:01 to play to fall 4-3 versus the visiting Ohio State Buckeyes (14-12-2, 11-12-1 WCHA). Nikki Eckebrecht (So.; Hamilton, Ont.) highlighted the scoring for the Beavers with a game-tying goal in the third and an assist.
For the second straight night, Jenny Schnickel (Sr.; Coon Rapids, Minn.) got the scoring started off for the Beavers with a first period goal. Eckebrecht picked up the assist as Bemidji State took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Schnickel’s marker continued her career success against Ohio State. It was her 10th career goal with four of them being against OSU.
Period two proved to be just the opposite for the Beavers. Ohio State scored three unanswered goals in the period on just 12 shots. Team scoring leader Jana Harrigan notched her 14th goal of the season, while teammate Meaghan Mulvaney lit the lamp twice for Ohio State.
A refocused Beaver entered after the second intermission and scored two goals in just 65 seconds with the first coming at the 15:43 mark off the stick of Carly Napier (Jr.; Toronto, Ont.). Napier’s goal came after she stole the puck at mid-ice and raced past the defense to unleash a slapshot past Buckeye netminder Melissa Glaser.
Bemidji State’s second goal of the third period came courtesy of Nikki Eckebrecht. A pass from Kelly Hart (So.; Ajax, Ont.) setup the Eckebrecht score to tie the game at 3-3.
The Beavers were able to keep the game tied until Amber Bowman of the Buckeyes broke loose and shot an unassisted goal past Beaver goalie Emily Brookshaw (Fr.; Webster, Wis.). The Beavers pulled the goalie for the last minute of the game, but were unable to force overtime with an extra attacker.
Glaser had 30 saves in the win for Ohio State and improved her record to 7-6-1.
For the Beavers, goalie Emily Brookshaw had 11 saves after she entered the game for teammate Jill
Luebke (Neenah, Wis.) when Bemidji State went down 3-1 with just over a minute to play in the second period. To that point, Luebke had made 18 stops. Brookshaw, however, picked up the loss to drop her record to 3-9-1.
The Beavers will be in action next week as they travel to face the Minnesota State Mavericks. Game times are slated for 7:05 on Feb. 11 and 3:05 on Feb. 12.
