WINONA, Minn. - The Bemidji State University
softball team took two tough losses away from the NSIC Southern
Crossover on Sunday against Concordia-St. Paul and host Winona
State. The Golden Bears shut out the Beavers with a score
of 7-0, while the Warriors offense handled most of the work
in a 23-1 rout.
The Beaver offense struggled in their first game of the day,
collecting just one hit. A scoreless game into the bottom
of the third, Concordia-St. Paul lit the scoreboard when they
pulled a double steal with runners on second and third. CSP
put up one more run in the inning on an RBI-single to take
a 2-0 lead.
Adding another in the fifth and four more runs in the sixth,
Concordia-St. Paul cruised easily to a 7-0 victory. Combined
efforts from pitchers Mandy Turba and Kristen Schmidt shut
down the Beaver offense.
MerriAnne Werder (Sr.; Browerville, Minn.) picked up the lone
hit for the Beavers, a single to start the top of the fourth.
Andrea Schue entered the game in the bottom of the second
with the bases loaded and pitched her way out of the jam.
Schue, however, picked up the loss as she pitched the final
five innings giving up seven runs on six hits. Five of the
seven Golden Bear runs were unearned behind three Beaver errors.
In the last game of the Southern Crossover, the Beavers took
on host Winona State. Bemidji State got on the board first,
picking up a run from Katie Gardas (Sr.; Arden Hills, Minn.)
on a error by the Warrior third baseman after Mandy Bambrough
(Jr.; Toronto, Ont.) had singled.
The BSU lead was quickly erased as the Warriors scored early
and often to put the game out of reach. WSU scored five runs
in the first inning and 11 in the second inning before tacking
on four and three runs in the next two innings.
Lindsay Rosicky led the offensive onslaught for Winona State
going 4-for-5, scoring five runs, and picking up an RBI.
The Beaver offense picked up just two hits. Bambrough and
Jamie Docken (Fr.; Owatonna, Minn.) each slapped a single
off of Warrior pitcher Jenny Stannis. Stannis struck out two
batters while pitching all five innings of a run-rule shortened
game.
Schue took the loss on the mound for BSU.
The Beavers will be in action at home on Tuesday, April 12
when they play a doubleheader against Rainy River Community
College. The games are slated to start at 2:00 p.m.
