ABERDEEN, S.D. -- Northern State University enforce the game plan
of playing from the inside out Saturday night, dominating
the paint on its way to an 87-59 Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference win over the Bemidji State University women's basketball
team at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen, S.D. The Wolves out
rebounded BSU 46-33, out numbering the Beavers' second-chance
points, 20-2 and increasing its shooting percentage while
holding Bemidji State's post players virtually silent.
The duet of Nancy McConkey
(Jr., F, Superior, Wis.) and Stephanie Peterson
(So., C, Bismarck, N.D.) had combined for and average of over
32 points and 20 rebounds in NSIC this season was held to
just 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Northern State was led by Noelle Hall who
netted game-highs of 20 points and 11 rebounds while Celia
Westphal added 16 points.
Bemidji State generated the bulk of its scoring
from some unlikely sources. The pair of Katherine
Bremmer (Jr., G, Granite Falls, Minn.) and Bridget
Smith (Fr., G, Burnsville, Minn.) each posted career-highs
as Bremmer notched 10 points while Smith led the Beavers from
beyond the arc hitting 4-of-6 for a team-high 12 points. Both
players logged season-highs for minutes play in a game. Maggie
Gernbacher (Jr., G, Bloomington, Minn.) got back
in the scoring column after failing to record a point in each
of the previous two games as she collected nine in the loss.
McConkey paced the Beavers on the glass corralling
eight rebounds. Colleen Boell's (Fr., G,
Burnsville, Minn.) six assists not only tied her for a game-high,
they were also good for her career-best.
The Wolves got on the scoreboard first taking
a six-point (6-0) lead before BSU would find the bottom of
the net for the first time. But by the 13:51 mark off the
first half, BSU had climbed back into the game using a 7-2
run to knot the game at 12-12.
The Wolves stretched their lead to 11 (25-14)
during the following 5:17 rattling off 13 of the next 15 points
and would go on to go up by as many at 17 before taking a
41-23 lead into the halftime break.
The Wolves's Sara Jensen hit a three just
23 seconds into the half to give NSU a 17-point margin and
that was as close as the Beavers would get as NSU outscored
BSU 46-32 in the final 20 minutes using a 20-9 string late
to break the game wide open, taking its largest lead of the
contest, 85-54, with 2:35 to go.
NSU would roll to the 87-59 win, improving
to 3-1 in NSIC play and 11-3 overall while BSU falls to 7-9
on the season and 1-3 in the league.
The Beavers' loss to Northern State extends
its longest current losing streak to any opponent to 17. The
Beavers are now 6-36 all-time versus the Wolves.
The Beavers return to the BSU Gymnasium next
weekend for their NSIC home opener versus Southwest Minnesota
State University and former head coach Mike Power. The following
night the Beavers host Wayne State College. Both games are
slated for 6 p.m. tip-offs.
