McConkey's 21 points vaults Beavers to 92-75 win at Winona State

Jan. 7, 2006

WINONA, Minn. --
[box score] Bemidji State University junior forward Nancy McConkey (Superior, Wis.) exploded out of the gates Saturday evening to net 13 of the Beavers' first 15 points in a 92-75 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win over Winona State University at McCown Gymnasium.

The junior took the game into her own hands early out scoring the Warriors 13-9 during the first 4:40 gaining a lead the Beavers would not relinquish.

Down three just 12 seconds into the game, BSU climbed on the back of McConkey as she netted her first six attempts of the game, putting BSU in front 15-9 just five minutes into the game. Shooting better than 50 percent in the half (16-30), the Beavers lead continued to build as the shots consistently fell. BSU would go up by 19 (42-23) before the halftime horn sounded.

BSU didn't slow out of the break as they netted the first four points of the half to build a 23-point lead.

WSU countered with a 13-4 run to reel BSU to within 14 (50-36) with over 16 minutes to play, but Bemidji State held on to the lead, going up by 25 (70-45) before claiming the 92-75 victory.

McConkey paced the Beavers netting 21 points on 7-of-11 attempts (.636). Stephanie Peterson (So., C, Bismarck, N.D.) posted a career-best for the second consecutive night collecting 17 points while grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Amy Lawson (So., G, Spencer, Iowa) pitched in 14 points leading all players with nine assists while freshman Heidi Matzke (G, Red lake, Falls, Minn.) rounded out the top four Beaver scorers with 10 points.

Liz Buttke scored a game-high 29 points to lead the Warriors.

The Beavers shot a season-high 56.1 percent on the night hitting 32-of-57 shots including a 6-of-11 effort from beyond the arc. The team also dominated the glass finishing the contest with a 43-32 rebounding advantage.

The win evens BSU overall record to 7-7 while it matches its conference win total from all of last season as it hold a 1-1 record in NSIC play. The Beavers will be back in action next weekend as they travel to MSU-Moorhead and Northern State for a pair of NSIC match-ups. Both games are slated for a 6 p.m. start.
