WINONA, Minn. - Bemidji State University’s five-game unbeaten streak, which included three wins in a row over Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opponents, came to a halt Sunday afternoon in Winona, Minn. Winona State University broke a 1-1 tie early in the second half and added a late goal to down the Beavers 3-1.
After Winona State’s Holly Sutton gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead in just the sixth minute, BSU’s Danielle Egeberg (Fr., M, New Hope, Minn.) found her way through the defense to knot the game in the 28th minute.
The unassisted goal was Egeberg’s second in the last two games and third on the season. The goal was also the first for a BSU player against the two-time defending NSIC Tournament champions since Oct. 5, 2003, a span of five games.
BSU goalkeeper Kari Torgerson knocked away the next five shots on goal to help her team to a 1-1 tie at the half.
But, the Warriors didn’t take long to grab the lead back with a goal just over a minute into the second half. Sutton notched her second of the game on a feed from Christine Beatty. Winona State added an insurance goal in the 80th minute from Amelia Kasten.
Winona State controlled the ball much of the game outshooting the Beavers 24-5 (15-2 SOG).
Torgerson ended the game with a season-high 12 saves, but took the loss, dropping the Beavers record to 9-6-1 overall and 5-3-0 in the NSIC.
With one game left in the regular season, BSU sits in third place in the conference. But, a win over Minnesota-Crookston on Oct. 21 would put them in a two-way tie with Northern State for second place heading into the league tournament. Bemidji State hasn’t lost to the Golden Eagles since Oct. 6, 2002, beating them four straight times since then.
