MARSHALL, Minn. -- The
Bemidji State University softball team completed a tough first day of
the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Southern Crossover at
Mustang Field on the campus of Southwest Minnesota State University.
The Beavers dropped the first game 8-0 to Concordia-St. Paul, and lost
game two 5-0 to the host Mustangs.
In the
first of a four-game weekend, Bemidji State faced Concordia-St. Paul
and NSIC Preseason Pitcher of the Year Kristen Schmidt. The Beavers
were unable to put together a rally against the hard-throwing Schmidt.
A second team All-America last season, Schmidt struck out 15 BSU
hitters, giving up just three hits.
Collecting
one hit apiece for the Beavers was Tara Hiscock (Fr.; Bemidji, Minn.),
Kasey Callison (Fr.; Eagle River, Alaska), and Jessica Pullar (Fr.; Elk
River, Minn.). Only one BSU player reached as far as second base in the
game, which was a double off the bat of Pullar.
On
the mound for the Beavers, Amy Potter (Fr.; Bovey, Minn.) a complete
game giving up eight runs in a run-rule shortened 5.1 innings. Potter
struck out five Golden Bears and walked none, but gave up eight runs on
11 hits, including three home runs. With the loss, Potter’s
season record dropped to 2-4.
The second game
of the day for the Beavers continued much of the same, as they were
unable to post any offense on the board in a 5-0 loss to Southwest
Minnesota State.
The Beavers collected just
five hits in the game. Freshman third baseman Amy Klaers (Elk River,
Minn.) had the best game at the plate for the Beavers going 2-for-3.
Hiscock, Bridget Smith (Fr.; Burnsville, Minn.), and Kelly Carlson
(Fr.; Hines, Minn.) each collected one hit.
Allison
Willard (Fr.; Hutchinson, Minn.) pitched a solid game on the mound
giving up just five runs, on five hits, and striking out two in five
innings of work. Potter pitched a perfect sixth, striking out two of
the three batters she faced. Willard took the loss dropping her season
record to 3-2.
The overall record for the Beavers fell to 9-7 as they start out the conference slate 0-2.
The Beavers are in Marshall, Minn. for two more games Sunday at the NSIC Southern Crossover.
