ST. CLOUD, Minn. (National Hockey Center) - St. Cloud
State’s Holly Roberts picked up two goals to lead the
Huskies to a 3-1 decision over Bemidji State in a Western
Collegiate Hockey Association battle. Bemidji State tied the
contest up late in the third period at one goal apiece but
the Huskies netted two unanswered goals in the third period
to lift the Huskies to a WCHA victory.
St. Cloud State’s Michelle Moen picked up a hooking
penalty at 11:01 of the first period to give the Beavers its
second power-play opportunity of the contest. The Beavers
were unable to take advantage of the man-advantage and would
give up it’s fifth short-handed goal of the season as
Hollly Roberts took a pass from Caitlin Hogan to net her 14th
goal of the season to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead at 12:37
of the first period. This was the Huskies fourth short-handed
goal of the season and Roberts second short-handed goal of
the season for the Huskies.
The second period saw St. Cloud State come out and dominate
much of the period as the Huskies were able to record nine
shots on goal and hold the Beavers to just one shot on goal
in the period. The last time Bemidji State was held to one
shot on goal in a period was on January 5, 2007 when Ohio
State out shot the Beavers 10-to-1 in the second period.
Bemidji State would tie the game at one apiece just 1:49 seconds
into the third period. Bemidji State’s Jenn Sadler (Pickering,
Ontario) picked up her eighth goal of the season for the Beavers
to tie the contest up at 1-1. Sadler’s goal was an unassisted
goal.
The game remained tied until late in the third period. Jamie
LeDuc (International Falls, Minn.) was called for tripping
at 14:27 of the period to give the Huskies it’s seventh
power-play of the game. It took the Huskies just :13 seconds
of the man-advantage to push the lead to 2-1. Caitlin Hogan
found the back of the net for the Huskies her 11th marker
of the season. Denelle Maguet and Jacqueline Jensen picked
up the helpers on the go-ahead and eventual game winning goal.
Bemidji State pulled it’s goaltender to bring on the
extra attacker but St. Cloud State took control of the puck
and was able to burry an empty net goal at 19:34 of the third
period to seal a 3-1 victory for the Huskies. Holly Roberts
picked up the empty net goal for St. Cloud State her second
goal of the game and her 15th goal of the season.
St. Cloud State out-shot Bemidji State 36-to-19 in the game,
12-to-10 in the first period, 9-to-1 in the second period
and 15-to-8 in the third period.
Emily Brookshaw (Webster, Wis.) took the loss as she stopped
33 of 35 shots faced in 59:32 minutes of work. With the loss
Brookshaw falls to 9-14-3 on the season for the Beavers.
Lauri St. Jacques picked up the win for the Huskies stopping
18 of 19 shots faced in 59:36 minutes of work, seeing her
record improve to 5-5-0 on the season for the Huskies.
The teams combined for 12 minor penalties in the contest,
five penalties for 10 minutes for the Huskies and seven penalties
for 14 minutes for the Beavers. St. Cloud State went 1-for-7
on the power-play, while Bemidji State went 0-for-5 on the
man-advantage.
Bemidji State falls to 15-17-4 all-time versus St. Cloud State
and 6-9-2 at the National Hockey Center.
Bemidji State is currently 4-4-0 in it’s last eight
games against the Huskies.
Bemidji State (10-14-3 / 8-11-2 WCHA) and St. Cloud State
(9-12-6 / 5-12-4 WCHA) will wrap up it’s two game series
tomorrow afternoon as the puck is slated to drop at 2:07 p.m.
