Beavers fall to North Dakota, end seven-game win streak

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The Bemidji State women’s hockey team allowed a power play goal with seven seconds remaining in the opening period, and was unable to generate any offense in the final two frames as the Beavers fell 1-0 to the University of North Dakota Friday evening at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Lexy Parenteau (Franconia, Minn.) was called for interference at the 19:25 mark of the first period, giving the Fighting Sioux their third power-play opportunity of the opening frame. Randi Motsko took advantage at the 19:53 mark with assists from Ashley Paulson and Melissa Jaques.

After getting outshot 12-5 in the first, the Beavers outshot the Fighting Sioux 18-15 the rest of the game. Brittany Kirkham was able to save all 23 shots faced to give North Dakota (1-2-2, 1-0-0 WCHA) its first victory of the season. BSU remains winless (0-4-1, 0-4-1 WCHA) despite a 26-save performance from Emily Brookshaw (Webster, Wisc.), who is the reigning WCHA Defensive Player of the Week.
BSU went 0-5 on the power play, and UND was 1-9. The Beavers were outshot 27-23 in the contest.

Lisa Kissick (Carman, Manitoba) led the way for BSU with five shots. Brooke Collins (Pilot Mound, Manitoba) attempted four shots, and three Beavers had three.

The loss snapped BSU’s seven-game win streak for BSU over UND that had dated back to Dec. 10, 2005. This was also the first loss to UND of coach Steve Sertich’s career. He went 4-0 against the Fighting Sioux in his first season with the Beavers.

Bemidji State will attempt to start a new winning streak against the Fighting Sioux Saturday when they play Game 2 of the two-game weekend series, which begins at 4:07 p.m.
