GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The Bemidji State women’s
hockey team allowed a power play goal with seven seconds remaining in
the opening period, and was unable to generate any offense in the final
two frames as the Beavers fell 1-0 to the University of North Dakota
Friday evening at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
Lexy
Parenteau (Franconia, Minn.) was called for interference at the 19:25
mark of the first period, giving the Fighting Sioux their third
power-play opportunity of the opening frame. Randi Motsko took
advantage at the 19:53 mark with assists from Ashley Paulson and
Melissa Jaques.
After getting outshot 12-5 in
the first, the Beavers outshot the Fighting Sioux 18-15 the rest of the
game. Brittany Kirkham was able to save all 23 shots faced to give
North Dakota (1-2-2, 1-0-0 WCHA) its first victory of the season. BSU
remains winless (0-4-1, 0-4-1 WCHA) despite a 26-save performance from
Emily Brookshaw (Webster, Wisc.), who is the reigning WCHA Defensive
Player of the Week.
BSU went 0-5 on the power play, and UND was 1-9. The Beavers were outshot 27-23 in the contest.
Lisa
Kissick (Carman, Manitoba) led the way for BSU with five shots. Brooke
Collins (Pilot Mound, Manitoba) attempted four shots, and three Beavers
had three.
The loss snapped BSU’s
seven-game win streak for BSU over UND that had dated back to Dec. 10,
2005. This was also the first loss to UND of coach Steve
Sertich’s career. He went 4-0 against the Fighting Sioux in his
first season with the Beavers.
Bemidji State
will attempt to start a new winning streak against the Fighting Sioux
Saturday when they play Game 2 of the two-game weekend series, which
begins at 4:07 p.m.
