DETROIT (Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum) - The
Bemidji State University men's ice hockey team saw its four-game
College Hockey America unbeaten streak come to an end Saturday as Wayne
State University handed the Beavers a 5-2 loss at the Michigan State
Fairground Coliseum earning their first conference win of 2007-08.
Bemidji
State struck first, but three Warrior goals during a 12:12 stretch to
end the first period and begin the second would put the Beavers in a
hole from which they were not able to dig their way out.
Although
BSU cut the deficit to a goal, 3-2, with 4:36 to play in the second
stanza, the Warriors would respond with their second power-play goal of
the night to regain their two-goal cushion and preserve the win.
WSU would add an empty net goal in the game's final minute to take the game, 5-2, and garner a series split.
BSU freshman Matt Read (F, Ilderton, Ontario) scored his second goal in as many nights to get the Beavers on the board just 3:44 into the contest. Cody Bostock (Jr., D, Salmon Arm, British Columbia) and Brandon Marino (Jr,
F, Riverside, Calif.) were credited with assists on the play as Marino
threaded a pass through traffic to Read who was camped out on the left
post during the Beavers' first power-play opportunity of the game. The
goal on the man advantage extended BSU current special teams scoring
streak to four games. The Beavers are 5-for-15 (.333) during that span.
Bemidji
State would see WSU's Jon Grabarek even the score less than seven
minutes later (10:27) on the Warriors' first chance up a man. He would
gave WSU its first lead in the series during the 17th minute propelling
the Warriors to the first intermission clinging to a 2-1 lead.
As
the second stanza got underway (3:39), Matt Krug netted his first tally
of the campaign to put the hosts up 3-1. Mike Forgie recorded his third
assist of the evening on the goal.
Joey Moggach (So., F, Brandon, Manitoba) helped BSU close in on the Warriors netting his first goal of 2007-08 with a one-timer from Tyler Scofield (Jr., F, Prince George, British Columbia) and Matt Pope
(Langley, British Columbia). The goal helped Moggach match Read and
Pope for the BSU scoring lead with seven points (1-6=7). The goal came
at the 15:36 mark of the second period as the Beavers were in the midst
of their second power play of the evening.
Less than three minutes later (18:07), WSU's Jared Katz dashed Bemidji State's comeback effort netting an even strength goal.
The Warriors would add an empty net marker with 23 seconds to go to secure the win.
BSU's goaltender Matt Climie
(Sr., Leduc, Alberta) stopped 16 WSU shots and allowed four goals in
57:33 between the pipes. The senior saw his own four-game unbeaten
streak come to an end falling to 4-2-1 on the season.
Brett Bothwell of Wayne State turned 31 BSU shots away while allowing two goals to post his first win of the season (1-3-0).
The
Beavers were 2-for-4 on the power play marking the first time during
the 2007-08 season that BSU has posted more than one power-play goal in
a single game.
WSU went on the man advantage
seven times making good on two of those opportunities. The BSU penalty
kill played well killing off five Warrior power plays including a pair
of 5-on-3 situations. The Beavers have now dismissed 32-of-36
power-play opportunities (.889).
As with every
other game this season, win or lose, the Beavers out shot their
opponent, 31-21. BSU now holds a 376-284 (+92) advantage in shots
through 12 games.
The Warriors (2-7-1; 1-3-0
CHA) close the gap in the all-time series to 22-8-5 Saturday with just
their third victory over the Beavers since Dec. 5, 2003.
With
the Wayne State men's hockey program dissolving at the 2007-08 season,
Saturday's affair closed the books on the Michigan State Fairgrounds
Coliseum for the Beavers--the site of BSU's last CHA Tournament
championship (2005).
Bemidji State (5-6-1;
3-2-1 CHA) takes a break from league play and returns home after two
long weeks on the road for an exhibition contest versus University of
Manitoba Nov. 20. The Tuesday evening tilt is set for a 7:05 opening
faceoff at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse.
