Bauerfeld scores first collegiate goal in 6-1 loss to Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Annie Bauerfeld (Fr., Woodbury, Minn.) made sure the Bemidji State University women’s hockey team would leave Columbus, Ohio, with at least one goal Saturday night.

She scored the final goal of the game between the Beavers and the Ohio State Buckeyes to salvage a 6-1 loss at OSU Ice Rink. Haley Balcom (Sr., Elk River, Minn.) picked up her second assist of the season on Bauerfeld’s goal, and her 18th career assist.

Hayley Klassen got OSU (5-3-2, 4-2-2 WCHA) on the board 8:57 into the first period, and Lisa Chesson scored the eventual game-winning power-play goal at the 13:15 mark. Morgan Marziali scored another first-period goal, and Raelyn LaRocque, Chesson and Michele Tonnessen each scored second-period goals. Christina Mancus, Rachel Davis, Tessa Bonhomme (2), Shannon Reilly, Erin Keys, Olivia Antognoli, Jenna Kilpatrick, LaRocque and Klassen all picked up assists in the game.

Jennifer Bauer (Fr., St. Catharines, Ontario) had a game-high 28 saves in only two periods in her first collegiate start for Bemidji State. She gave up six goals and took her first loss (0-1-0). Emily Brookshaw (Sr., Webster, Wisc.) played the third period in net for BSU, saving eight shots while not allowing a goal. Liana Bonanno (5-3-2) had 11 saves in net for OSU. Diedre Facklis played the third period for the Buckeyes, giving up one goal and saving nine shots.

After being outshot 11-34 in the first two periods, the Beavers outshot OSU 10-8 in the final frame. Bemidji State also had only five penalties to OSU’s six.

This was the first time since an Oct. 20-21, 2006, series with No. 4-ranked Minnesota Duluth that the Beavers have allowed six goals or more in consecutive games.

BSU (0-7-1, 0-7-1 WCHA) has six goals this season, all coming from freshmen. The Beavers moved to 11-20-5 all-time against Ohio State, but are 4-3-2 in the last nine meetings with the Buckeyes.

The Beavers step out of conference Nov. 9-10 with a two-game series at Niagara University. Game times are set for 6 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
