MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Bemidji State
women’s hockey team continued its strong play as of late, but it
wasn’t enough as the Beavers fell 5-0 Friday to No. 6 Minnesota
at Ridder Arena.
Bemidji State continued to
hurt itself on special teams by allowing two power-play goals to the
Gophers during the contest. The Beavers improved the amount of time
spent in the penalty box, committing only three penalties for six
minutes, but Minnesota was able to convert on 2-of-3 chances. The
Beavers went 0-for-2 on the power play.
Erica McKenzie received a pass from Gigi Marvin right in front of the net and was able to flick the puck past Emily Brookshaw
(Sr., Webster, Wisc.) for the first goal of the game at the 9:27 mark
of the opening period. Rachael Drazan initiated the play and was also
credited with an assist.
Marvin notched
another power-play goal 5:47 into the second period, and Bobbi Ross
scored at the 11:42 mark of the frame to put the Gophers ahead 3-0.
Melanie Gagnon scored four minutes into the third period and Marvin
scored her second goal of the game with 8:56 remaining to round out the
scoring for Minnesota (10-4-1, 8-4-1 WCHA). Drazan, Dagny Willey (2),
McKenzie, Jen Schoullis, Brittany Francis (2) and Marvin each received
assists in the contest.
Brookshaw (1-10-3)
played all 60 minutes in net for the Beavers and had another stellar
performance, saving 41 shots in the contest. This was her first game
since she broke the BSU record for saves in a career. She increased her
school record to 2,446.
Kim Hanlon was in net for the Gophers and had 17 saves, improving her record to 5-1-1. BSU was outshot 46-17 by Minnesota.
Bemidji
State (1-11-3, 0-9-2 WCHA) will return to Ridder Arena Saturday at 3:07
