WARRENSBURG, Mo. (Crane Stadium)- The Bemidji State baseball team dropped its first
two games of the Central Missouri State Tournament in Warrensbug,
Mo., today as the Beavers fell to the Upper Iowa Peacocks
in its first game 22-9 and then dropped its second contest
of the day to #11 Central Missouri State, 8-0.
Bemidji State committed seven errors which helped Upper Iowa
comeback from a 9-6 deficit and take 22-9 victory over the
Beavers in Bemidji State’s first game of the Central
Missouri State Tournament. Upper Iowa struck first in the
top half of the first inning to grab an early 1-0 lead. Mitch
Walser picked up a two out single that scored Nick Fjelland
to give the Peacocks their first lead of the game.
Bemidji State scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning
to take its first lead of the game. Anthony Turk (Little Falls,
Minn.) got things started for the Beavers, doubling down the
right field line. Turk would then advance to third on a wild
pitch and eventually would score on a single by Tony Samuelson
(Pine City, Minn.). Josh Juntunen (Elk River, Minn.) doubled
to score Samuelson to give the Beavers a 2-1 lead at the end
of one inning of play.
Upper Iowa regained the lead at 6-2 with a five run second
inning, picking up five runs on three hits and two errors.
Bemidji State answered the five run inning by the Peacocks
with a six run inning to regain the lead a 8-6. Mike Wagner
(Plymouth, N.H.) led the inning off with a walk and then advanced
to second on a wild pitch. Rich Bohannan (Goodyear, Ariz.)
doubled to score Wagner and then would score himself when
Samuelson drew an RBI walk. Anthony Stoloski (Half Moon Bay,
Calif.) capped the scoring for the Beavers when he hit a grand
slam to center field. Bemidji State pushed it’s lead
to 9-6 in the fourth innning on a sacrifice fly to center
field by Nick Noack (Hudson, Wis.). That would cape the scoring
for the Beavers as the Peacocks would scoring sixteen unanswered
runs to take a 22-9 victory.
The Peacocks scored six runs in the fifth inning, four runs
in the sixth inning, five runs in the seventh inning and one
run in the eight inning to lift Upper Iowa to the victory.
Turk, Samuelson, Stoloski, and Juntunen record 10 on Bemidji
State’s 12 hits in the contest. Turk went 3-for-4, Samuelson
went 2-for-4 with two RBI’s, Stoloski went 2-for-4 with
four RBI’s and Juntunen was 3-for-4 with one RBI.
Kevin Morel (Shoreview, Minn.) got the start for the Beavers
allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits and one walk in four
innings pitched. Bemidji State used three men out of the bullpen
in the contest, with all three allowing at least one earned
run. Casey Allar (Sartell, Minn.) picked up the loss for the
Beavers allowing one earned run on four hits in two innings
of work dropping his record to 0-1 on the season.
Marshall Rogne picked up the win for the Peacocks allowing
no earned runs on five hits in six innings of relief for his
first win of the season.
Game 2 saw Bemidji State up against the host team #11 Central
Missouri State. The Bemidji State bats were silenced as the
Mules rode a outstanding performance from Matt Michals and
Danny Potje in a 8-0 shutout loss. Michals pitched seven complete
innings, while giving up just two hits and striking out seven.
Potje came in for relief giving up just one walk in two innings
pitched.
Bemidji State went down 1-2-3 in the first inning and saw
the Mules score two runs in the bottom half of the first to
take a 2-0 lead. With two outs Luis Perez hit a two-run homer
to left field to give Central Missouri the early lead.
The Mules pushed its lead to 4-0 when Luis Perez struck again
when he hit another two-run homer to left field, this time
with just one out in the inning. Central Missouri State picked
up one run in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 6-0 lead
into the late innings. The Mules used another two run inning
in the eight inning to put the finishing touches on the victory.
Nick Jaros picked up a two run double to cap the scoring for
the Mules.
Tony Samuelson (Pine City, Minn.) and Shaun Corbett (Mora,
Minn.) picked up the two hits for the Beavers.
Josh Langlie (Thief River Falls, Minn.) picked up the loss
for the Beavers allowing six earned runs on 12 hits, dropping
his record to 0-2 on the season. Karl Willers (Slayton, Minn.)
pitched two innings in relief allowing two runs on four hits
allowing one walk.
Michals improved to 2-0 on the year with his seven-inning
gem, holding BSU to two hits and striking out seven.
Bemidji State (0-6) will play its final game of the Central
Missouri Tournament on March 4, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. against
the University of Nebraska, Omaha.
