Climie blanks Chargers for third time in 2007-08

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Von Braun Center) - Two goals from junior defenseman Cody Bostock (Salmon Arm, British Columbia) and a 25-save, shutout for Matt Climie (Sr., G, Leduc, Alberta) powered the first-place Bemidji State University men's ice hockey team to a 4-0 College Hockey America victory over the University of Alabama-Huntsville Friday at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Ala.

Climie turned away six shots in each of the first and second periods and 11 in the third to blank the Chargers for the third time this season, the fourth time in his career and stretch his school-record career shutouts mark to 11. The victory also moves him into a tie with Grady Hunt (2000-2004) for BSU's Division I era goaltending wins mark as he improved to 39-26-10.

Bemidji State was first to light the lamp when Bostock corralled a loose puck at the top of the left circle and fired his fourth goal of the season threw the five hole of Blake MacNicol with 8:14 gone in the first period. The goal, assisted by Matt Read (Fr., F, Illderton, Ontario) and Travis Winter (Jr., F, St. Cloud, Minn.) stood as the game winner as Climie would take care of the rest. The game-winner was his third of the season tying him with Winter for the team' lead.

Tyler Lehrke (So., F, Park Rapids, Minn.) was the beneficiary of being the right place at the right time to put the Beavers up 2-0 just 2:13 into the second. Lehrke came up with a rebound off of MacNicol from a Matt Francis (Jr., F, Surrey, British Columbia) shot, and rolled it over the shoulder of the Charger goalie for his first tally of 2007-08. The goal snapped a streak of 31 games without a goal for the sophomore.

With 6:31 gone in the second, Bostock would add his second goal of the night on assists from Brandon Marino (Jr., F, Riverside, Calif.) and Read to make good on the Beavers' second of three power-play opportunity on the night, just nine seconds before it expired.

The Beavers would skate to the locker room for the second intermission grasping a 3-0 lead knowing that they came into the game 5-0-1 when leading after two. Despite getting out shot 11-4 in the final period, sophomore forward Chris McKelvie (New Brighton, Minn.) would add an insurance goal during the seventh minute (6:34) pushing the score to 4-0. Defenseman David Deterding (Sr., Alexandria, Minn.) was credited with the assist on the play.

BSU special teams play was again solid as its penalty kill squashed all four of the Chargers power-play opportunities while the power-play was 1-for-3.

Earning his first victory since a 2-0 shutout of the same UAH squad Dec. 8, Climie improves to 8-4-2 this season with a 6-1-2 mark in league play.

MacNicol matched BSU's goaltender's 23 saves but was tagged with the loss allowing four goals. He falls to 1-5-2 on the year.

The win marks BSU's 11th over the Chargers (7-7-4) in the last 14 meetings between the teams (11-1-2) while the Beavers reeled UAH to 26-24-4 in the all-time series.

Bemidji State climbs over the .500 mark for the first time since it was 8-7-2 on Dec. 14th improving to 10-9-2 overall and 7-2-2 in CHA play. The team looks to complete a league road sweep for the first time in 2007-08 tomorrow when it is slated to take on the same Charger squad in a 4:00 p.m. match up at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Ala.
