HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Von Braun Center) - Junior
Tyler Scofield (F, Prince George, British Columbia) and freshman
Matt Read
(F, Ilderton, Ontario) each netted three points aiding the Bemidji
State University men's ice hockey team to their highest goal total of
the season and a 7-1 College Hockey America victory over the University
of Alabama-Huntsville in the Chargers own Von Braun Center Saturday.
The
victory helped BSU complete the series sweep over UAH marking the first
time Beavers have registered a road sweep over the Chargers since the
teams made the jump to the major college hockey level for the 1999-2000
campaign.
Ten BSU players tallied at least a
point in the victory with seven getting finding the score sheet in the
four-goal, third period explosion to break the game open.
Bemidji
State built a 2-0 lead before the first frame came to an end scoring a
pair of goals during the final 2:30. Scofield put the Beavers on the
board when he netted a 5-on-3 goal with 17:45 on the clock. Read and Cody Bostock (Jr., D, Salmon Arm, British Columbia) earned assists on the play. Matt Francis
(Jr., F, Surrey, British Columbia) corralled his second point of the
weekend with just 40 seconds left in the stanza taking an odd-angle
shot from the goal line extended that found its way into the net. The
goal, assisted on by Riley Weselowski (Sr., D, Pilot Mound, Manitoba), stood as the game-winner. It was the first of the season for Francis.
Out
the gates in the second, the Beavers got caught on their heels. Matt
Sweazy took a pass from Cale Tanaka and found the back of the net to
cut the BSU lead to 2-1 just 55 seconds after the drop of the puck. The
goal snapped Matt Climie's (Sr., G, Leduc, Alberta) shutout streak versus the Chargers this season at 140:55.
Senior Matt Pope
(C, Langley, British Columbia) stretched the Beavers' lead to two goals
before time expired in the second netting his seventh goal of the
season with help from Blaine Jarvis (Sr., F, Gladstone, Manitoba).
In
one of the strangest moments of the BSU 2007-08 season, the Beavers and
Chargers were sent to the locker rooms for the second intermission with
52 seconds remaining on the clock. The teams took the early break due
to a segment of the boards and glass that needed to be repaired.
The
Beavers then played what amounted to a 20:52 third period skating 52
seconds to complete the second then took a two-minute break only to
return for the drop of the puck in the third.
The
Beavers turned the intensity up a notch in the final frame lighting the
lamp four times to extend their lead to six goals, 7-1. Brandon Marino
(Jr., F, Riverside, Calif.) got the scoring started 2:43 into the
period netting his second goal of the season on an assist from Chris Peluso
(So., D, Wadena, Minn.). Read potted a power-play goal with help from
Marino and Scofield at the 6:04 mark before Scofield would put BSU
beyond the five-goal plateau for the first time in 2007-08 on an
unassisted goal during the 16th minute. Freshman Ian Lowe
(F, Bradwardine, Manitoba) capped the scoring for the night, recording
his first collegiate goal, the Beavers' second 5-on-3 goal of the game,
with 18:47 gone in the third. Weselowski and Bostock were credited with
helpers on the play.
The Bemidji State special
teams units continue to drive the Beavers' success. Saturday the
penalty-kill held the Chargers scoreless on seven power-play
opportunities to finish the weekend holding UAH to 0-for-11 on the man
advantage. The BSU power-play posted its first three-goal game of the
season going 3-for-7. The performances aided the Beavers units to
improve to 56.8 percent efficiency to rank first in all of NCAA
Division I hockey.
Climie collected 31 saves
and allowed just one goal in 59:58 of work between the pipes for his
40th career victory. The Beavers' Division I era victory leader is now
9-4-2 this season and 40-26-10 in his career. He has posted a mark of
11-3-2 in 16 appearances versus UAH including an impressive four career
shutouts.
Cameron Talbot go the start in net
for the Chargers and allowed the Beavers' two first period goals before
being replaced by Blake MacNicol to begin the second period. After
logging 22:43 and allowing two more BSU goals, MacNicol got the hook.
Talbot reappeared for the game's final 17:17. He allowed a total of
five goals in the game and was tagged falling to 1-7-0 on the season.
The
win marks BSU's 11th over the Chargers (2-12-2) in the last 15 meetings
between the teams (11-3-1) while the Beavers reeled UAH to 26-25-4 in
the all-time series. With no more games versus UAH on the
regular-season schedule, captures the season series with a 5-0-1 mark
versus the Chargers.
Bemidji State, now 11-9-2
overall, continues to pace the CHA with an 8-2-2 mark in league play.
The team now heads west to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado for a
two-game non-conference stint versus some of the nation's best. The
Beavers battle No. 4 Colorado College (15-6-0) Friday at 8:35 p.m. It
won't get any easier for BSU Saturday as the team travels to the Mile
High City for a match up with the second-ranked Pioneers of the
University of Denver (17-4-0). The weekend finale is set for an 8 p.m.
start.
